Monas, short for Monumen Nasional, symbolizes the nation's struggle for independence. This massive monument was built in 1961 under the direction of former president, Soekarno and completed 14 years later. Inside the monument lies a museum containing dioramas depicting Indonesian history and a hall showcasing the original declaration of independence. An elevator takes visitors up to the observation deck, which offers panoramic views of Jakarta from above.
