an exciting experience for children because they can see wild animals up close, the area is still natural but the road signs and pedestrian areas are well maintained and clear.

Be one with nature with many monkeys. No need to be afraid because the monkeys here are not wild as long as we follow the instructions on how to interact with the monkeys.

There aren't too many photos because the staff recommends keeping your cellphones while in the monkey forest. Overall, it was very enjoyable even though we visited during the rain.

It was amazing experience. It was my first visit and I have scary yet funny incidents. So one monkey took my brother chips definitely they know too well even it’s hide it somewhere inside your bag they can open it. So beware if your bag carrying a lot of snacks. The monkey stealer will take it. And secondly they tried to take my husband tshirt as well no idea why. Not much to see other than wild monkey hehe pretty clean and no rain fortunately. We can enjoy walk around it fantastic.

More about Monkey Forest Ubud

About Monkey Forest Ubud

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, commonly known as Monkey Forest Ubud is situated in Ubud, Bali. The forest covers approximately 12.5 hectares and boasts over 115 species of trees. It is a must-visit tourist destination in Bali if you seek tranquility during your trip due to various reasons.

This popular attraction is a home for hundreds of long-tailed monkeys revered by the local Balinese people.  They’ve got personality—friendly, curious, and occasionally a bit cheeky yet not aggressive by nature. If they hop onto your shoulder, just drop any food and walk away calmly. And whatever you do, avoid staring them in the eyes—it’s like challenging them to a staring contest!

The Ubud Monkey Forest is not just a tourist spot; it's a conservation area preserving local biodiversity and cultural heritage. Home to three sacred Hindu temples—Dalem Agung Padangtegal, Beji, and Prajapati—this forest is still used for religious ceremonies. As you wander through the forest, you’ll find yourself surrounded by towering trees, overhanging vines, and the playful chatter of monkeys.

The forest belongs to and is overseen by the village of Padang Tegal. Within its grounds, you’ll find a graveyard and associated temples, making it a sacred site. The revenue from ticket sales supports religious ceremonies in the village, including temple festivals and cremations. It’s a wonderful place to contribute to a good cause.

By imagining lush greenery, ancient temples, and cheeky monkeys swinging around once you step into the forest, you will realize that this place is a hidden gem in Bali, offering a magical escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Tips for Visiting Monkey Forest Ubud

To make the most out of your visit and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, consider these handy tips:

Respect the Monkeys

While the monkeys are accustomed to human interaction, they are still wild animals. Avoid making direct eye contact, as this can be seen as a challenge. Don’t attempt to touch or pet the monkeys, and always be cautious of your belongings. Keep your bags zipped and hold onto your camera tightly.

Dress Comfortably

Wear light, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. The forest can be humid, and the trails can be uneven, so dress appropriately for a day of exploration. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

Stay Hydrated

Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, especially if you’re visiting during the hotter parts of the day. There are vendors selling drinks and snacks at the entrance, but it’s always good to have your own supply.

Follow the Rules

The sanctuary has a set of guidelines to ensure both visitors and the monkeys stay safe. Pay attention to the signs and follow the rules such as prohibition of bringing shiny items like jewellery for all visitors.

Be Prepared for Rain

Bali’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to carry a small umbrella or raincoat, especially if you’re visiting during the rainy season (November to March). The forest can get slippery when wet, so tread carefully.

Respect the Cultural Significance

Remember that Monkey Forest Ubud is not just a tourist attraction but also a sacred site. Show respect for the temples and the rituals that might be taking place. Dress modestly if you plan to enter the temple areas and follow any specific guidelines provided by the staff.

Mind Your Personal Items

Monkeys are naturally curious and can be quite bold. Keep an eye on your belongings, as they are known to snatch sunglasses, hats, and even cameras. If a monkey grabs something from you, don’t try to retrieve it yourself; instead, inform a staff member for assistance.
