Melbourne’s Christmas Wonderland returns to Caulfield Racecourse with a three-hour walk-through spectacular that wraps up every part of the season under one giant Big Top. Inside, you’ll find a roller-skating rink, carnival rides, a craft village, live shows with the Care Bears, and even Mrs Claus reading stories between carols. Kids can write letters at the North Pole Post Office, take a photo with Santa or the Grinch, and spin through teacups and mini trains while snow machines and fairy lights set the scene. It’s designed for younger children… but the nostalgia hits everyone.

Fed Square transforms into Melbourne’s Christmas Square, glowing nightly under a 17.5-metre LED tree powered entirely by wind energy. Giant candy canes line the plaza, families gather beneath the lights, and every hour after dark, an on-the-hour sound-and-light show fills the square with carols and colour. Opening night on 28 November marks the first tree lighting of the season, launching the city’s Christmas Festival with free live entertainment. It’s the centrepiece of Christmas in Melbourne. Easy to reach, festive from morning to late, and a joy to wander through on a warm December evening.

Santa’s official bubble builder, Dr Bubble, is back in his lab for a Christmas experiment gone delightfully wrong. When his wish for company brings Milkshake the Bubble Clown to life, chaos (and thousands of shimmering bubbles) fills the theatre. Expect clever bubble tricks, light haze, laughter, and plenty of audience interaction. Each session is Auslan interpreted, and the 24 December shows are relaxed performances for kids who prefer a gentler pace. It’s silly, sparkly, and ideal for families with young children.

Settle in at Melbourne’s art deco landmark, The Capitol, for a festive film season filled with family favourites and cult Christmas classics. Screenings run across four December weekends, featuring The Santa Clause (6 Dec), Home Alone (13 Dec), Arthur Christmas (20 Dec), and Elf (21 Dec). All sessions are part of the City of Melbourne’s Christmas Festival. It’s a cosy, low-cost way to wind down and enjoy some cinematic cheer before Christmas week.

Crown’s Christmas River Show lights up the Yarra each night with fountains, lasers and bursts of colour dancing to a soundtrack mixed by Melbourne DJ Grant Smillie. The spectacle plays every 15 minutes along the Southbank Promenade, turning the river into a festive stage of water and light. Families stop to watch between dinner and dessert, kids point out shapes in the mist, and the reflections shimmer against the city skyline.

Every corner of Melbourne lights up for Christmas, turning the city into one big open-air display. At Docklands, a giant golden reindeer gleams against the skyline, and there’s a glowing Christmas star on the Evan Walker Bridge. Around town, nutcracker soldiers stand guard outside Melbourne Town Hall and Queen Victoria Market, while candy canes, bells and festive koalas brighten laneways from Hardware Lane to AC/DC Lane. After dark, the Melbourne Town Hall becomes a glowing landmark with projections by The Electric Canvas lighting the façade every ten minutes from 9 to 11 pm.

Two Christmas favourites hit Melbourne’s biggest stages with full orchestral power. First up, Dr Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas takes over Hamer Hall, where the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs James Horner’s score live to the Jim Carrey classic. Then, just before Christmas, Love Actually in Concert fills Melbourne Town Hall with the Australian Stage Orchestra, bringing every tender, funny, and slightly chaotic moment to life on screen. Whether you’re laughing at the Grinch’s mischief or tearing up at Hugh Grant’s dance through Downing Street, these concerts prove that Christmas movies (and love, actually) sound even better live.

Melbourne’s libraries turn festive this December with storytimes, songs, and craft sessions for kids of all ages. Little ones can dance and sing along at Christmas Stompers, while Santa Storytime brings carols and tales of reindeer and elves. Older children can get creative at Christmas Crafternoon, making decorations and cards to take home. There’s even a Pyjama Storytime for those who prefer their Christmas stories in their PJs before bed.

A Melbourne Christmas tradition turns 70 with A Playful LEGO Christmas Story, the theme of this year’s windows. Six animated windows use more than 480,000 LEGO bricks in a display that follows a child’s letter to Santa from a Melbourne post office to the North Pole, complete with toy-painting elves, a Wrap-O-Matic gift machine and Santa’s sleigh ready for take-off. Downstairs, the LEGO Christmas Playland invites kids to build, create and pose for photos.

Santa’s making plenty of stops around Melbourne this Christmas, so you’ve got no excuse not to get a great photo. At David Jones, book a traditional Santa portrait or bring the dog along for a festive pet pic. Over at The Block Arcade, Santa sets up beneath the heritage dome for classic family photos in one of the city’s prettiest spots. Myer Santaland on Level 7 is the full experience. For something outdoorsy, head to Christmas Wonderland at Skyline Melbourne on South Wharf Promenade, or Santa selfies at Collins Square.
