No one does Christmas quite like Sydney — transforming into a festive wonderland before our eyes, Sydney is where you’ll want to be this Christmas season. From dazzling Christmas-themed harbour cruises, to bustling joyous markets that bring holiday cheer to locals and visitors alike, you can’t help but get into the festive spirit when you’re here.
Whether you’re watching the iconic Christmas tree light up at Martin Place, watching the ballet at the Sydney Opera House, or attending a wreath-making workshop with friends, there is a Christmas event in Sydney that’ll make you feel the magic of the season.
So with so many events on around this time, we’ve found our favourite Christmas events in Sydney we think are well worth attending.

Where is it?: St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney
When is it? 5.30pm to 10:30pm daily from 12-25 December, 2025. Lights on at 8:30pm
Entry: Free
Experience the magic of Christmas at this iconic 14-day festival at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Right at the heart of Sydney, expect the night to come alive with food and gift stalls, live entertainment, and roaming performers. But the real showstopper? The breathtaking light projections onto the Cathedral itself — retelling the classic story of “A Christmas Carol”. Our tip? Go early and make sure you’re there for lights on at 8:30 pm.

Where is it?: Martin Place, Sydney
When is it?: 11am to 9:30pm from 27 November to 20 December, 2025

Martin Place is home to the tallest Christmas tree in NSW. With more than 110,000 LED lights, a 3.4-metre colour-changing star, and 330 glossy baubles. It’s also dressed in 15,000 flowers that represent the 9 different kinds of Australian flowers — banksia, waratah, bottlebrush, wattle, eucalyptus gum flower, kangaroo paw, flannel flower, pink wax flower, and white wax flower.
From the 27th of November, this iconic Christmas tree will light up at 8pm and will mark the beginning of the festive season in the city, as well as the start of the Martin Place Christmas markets which take place within the same square.
From artisan foods, handmade gifts, to live entertainment, it’s one of Sydney’s most enchanting Christmas markets. If you only have time to go to one this year, make it this one.

When is it? 6:30pm to- 8:30pm on 27 November 2025

Wander down Circular Quay in the evening and you might hear Santa’s presence before you even see him. Accompanied by a 90-piece marching band and elves on reindeer tricycles (yes, really), Santa will ride along Pitt Street, Sydney, before ending up in Martin Place just in time to light up the iconic 24-metre Christmas tree.

Presented by The Australian Ballet, the enchanting score and charming story of The Nutcracker comes to life at the Sydney Opera House. Dress up in your favourite ballet-inspired outfit and watch talented performers and ballerinas take the stage. This interactive and captivating performance is perfect for families.

When is it?: 10am to 11:30am on 29 November 2025

Make your very own festive wreath to adorn your door this Christmas with a fun and interactive wreath making workshop. Led by florist Caitlin Bye from Golden Hour Botanicals, you’ll get the chance to mix and match fresh and dired flowers to create your perfect wreath. It’s the perfect activity to get creative with friends and family.

Put your party shows on and sing and dance your way into the Christmas spirit at the Pyrmont Christmas concert. Completely free to enter, you’ll be captivating by talented performers, craft activities, as well a range of outdoor games for the kids (think giant jenga and table tennis). Just pack a picnic, come early, and make a day out of it!
