Free food, activities and music are the name of the game at Fed Square on Australia Day as the city celebrates all things Australian. There will be performances by Bluey starting at 10am, roving characters you can meet, interactive workshops and free sausauge sizzles and ice creams. For sports fans who wouldn't get tickets to the Australian Open, it will be screening at Fed Square throughout the day.

Hosted by the Governor of Victoria with the Premier present, the formal flag-raising ceremony on Australia will take place at Melbourne Town Hall. The ceremony features a Tri-Service Guard, Australia Day affirmation and, of course, the Australian national anthem.

A Melbourne staple this time of year, while not an official Australia Day event, the Australian Open always overlaps with the national holiday. Grab a grounds pass or last-minute tickets to a match on the day and cheer on your favourite Aussie tennis players.

Australia Day falls right in the peak of the Midsumma Festival, Victoria's LGBTQIA+ festival about all things arts and culture. One of the most popular Australia Day traditions in Melbourne, the Governor opens the doors of Government House to the public. So if you've ever wanted to take a sticky beak at what goes on in the building, this is your chance. Tour the historic State Apartments, wander around the private gardens and watch live performances by local community groups. There will be food for purchase and community barbecues available.
Most of the Australia Day events are centred around the CBD, Southbank, and the Melbourne Park area. Staying within the grid of the CBD or near the Yarra River is your best bet for easy access to the festivities and public transport.
