For most travellers, flying is by far the most practical way to travel from Bali to Surabaya.

The Monumen Kapal Selam, or Submarine Monument, offers an unusual sightseeing experience: you can explore a preserved Indonesian Navy submarine.

It's a relatively compact attraction, so it's easy to combine with other central-city sightseeing.

If you're looking for air conditioning and a little retail therapy after exploring the city in the heat, Tunjungan Plaza is an enormous shopping complex in central Surabaya.

The complex includes shops, restaurants, supermarkets, entertainment and cinemas.

It might not be the most traditional Indonesian experience, but it's a useful place to take a break, and perhaps pick up some snacks before your next adventure.

For many international travellers, Surabaya is less about the city and more about what comes next.

Mount Bromo, located within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, is one of East Java's signature attractions. Its landscape includes the enormous Tengger caldera, the Sea of Sand and dramatic volcanic peaks.

From Surabaya, the drive to the Bromo area generally takes around 2–3 hours, depending on the route and traffic. Indonesia Travel recommends leaving around midnight if you're travelling directly from Surabaya and want to reach the viewpoint in time for sunrise.

If you're travelling from Bali to Surabaya during the same Indonesian trip, you don't need another visa. Bali and Surabaya are both within Indonesia, so the flight is a domestic journey.

Your Indonesian entry permission remains relevant for the entire trip.

As of the latest Australian Government advice, Australians travelling to Indonesia for tourism can use an e-Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) or Visa on Arrival (VOA). The fee is IDR 500,000, and the visa allows a 30-day stay that can be extended once for another 30 days under the applicable rules.
