Balinese are famous for their religious festivals and events. You can plan a trip during some of the famous festivals and celebrations to witness the wonder of Balinese culture. The most popular time to visit for both local and international travelers is to arrive in Bali several days before Nyepi.
The day before Nyepi, the festivities begin with Ogoh-Ogoh Parade - where the local youth groups (banjar) build enormous, fearsome papier-mâché statues representing evil spirits and negative energies. In the late afternoon and evening, the groups go around carrying these massive and impressive figures through the streets with loud gamelan music and cheering crowds serenading them.
After the festivities, come Nyepi - the Balinese New Year, also known as the Day of Silence. The entire island of Bali completely shuts down for 24 hours, this includes the airport, shop, restaurants, and roads. In short, everyone (including tourists) should stay at home/hotels, enjoying quiet times, without bright lights, loud sounds, and entertainment (even the wi-fi and cellular data usually offline). During this time, the streets are entirely empty except for traditional security patrols (Pecalang).
You can rent a car and drive around or book a car with local drivers to go around Bali. Starting from Kuta, continue to explore the South Kuta beaches, temple, and the famous Garuda Wisnu Kencana, followed by a day spent in Ubud, and to venture to the Bangli and Gianyar area the next day, before heading back to Kuta area.
Plan an itinerary beforehand and discuss it with the family and your driver to get an estimated days, accommodations needed, costs plus things to see along the way.
When in Bali, shopping is of course one of the must things to do. You can either enjoy the malls, or go for a more authentic Balinese shopping trip by purchasing from the local shops, boutiques, and artisans.
