A Great Holiday at Cottesloe Beach, Perth in 2026: Surf, Sunsets, and Sculpture

Cottesloe Beach sits 14 kilometres from Perth's CBD between the city and Fremantle, facing the Indian Ocean from the Trigg coastline. It is arguably the finest urban beach in Australia — not just because of the white sand and clear water, but because of the cumulative culture that has developed around the beach over more than a century. The Indiana Tea House pavilion on the foreshore, the Sunday afternoon sunset gatherings, the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition each March, the resident community of surfers and ocean swimmers — all of it creates a beach with genuine character that is difficult to replicate. Here is what to do at Cottesloe.

Things to Do at Cottesloe Beach

Surfing and Swimming

Cottesloe has consistent surf breaks that produce reliable conditions for board riders at the northern (Cottesloe) and southern (North Cott) sections of the beach. Multiple safe swimming areas with lifeguard coverage during the summer season are designated along the main beach, and the water clarity here is exceptional — Indian Ocean visibility makes the shallows look tropical even in moderate conditions. An active surf club community means there are generally experienced eyes in the water.

Sculpture by the Sea

Every March, Sculpture by the Sea transforms Cottesloe Beach into one of the most extraordinary outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the world. Works by Australian and international artists are installed directly on the beach, in the water, and across the surrounding headlands, turning the entire foreshore into a free-entry open-air gallery for approximately three weeks. The combination of large-scale sculpture, ocean backdrop, and the particular light of the Perth autumn makes this one of the most visually striking events in Western Australia.

Sunset Viewing

Cottesloe faces due west across the Indian Ocean, which means the sunsets here are genuinely among the best available from any urban beach in Australia. Local tradition involves gathering at the beach in the late afternoon with drinks and food from the nearby cafes and restaurants to watch the sun drop into the water. The Indiana Tea House verandah on the foreshore is the most popular vantage point, but any position along the beach or the grassy lawns above it works equally well.

Cycling: Cottesloe to Hillarys Coastal Track

The Cottesloe to Hillarys coastal cycling track spans approximately 25 kilometres north along the coast, passing through Swanbourne, City Beach, Scarborough, Trigg, and Marmion before reaching Hillarys Boat Harbour. The path runs close to the water for much of its length with regular access points to swim or rest. Bikes can be rented in Cottesloe and the track is suitable for all fitness levels. Plan for 2 to 3 hours one-way at a comfortable pace.

Snorkelling at Peters Pool

Peters Pool, at the northern end of North Cottesloe Beach, is a natural rock pool that provides protected, calm-water snorkelling over a reef populated with sea stars, crabs, small reef fish, and octopus. The water clarity here is excellent when swell is minimal and visibility can extend to 10 metres or more. Bring your own snorkel gear as there is no rental available on site.

Getting to Cottesloe Beach

By public transport from Perth CBD, take the Fremantle line train from Perth Station to Cottesloe Station, then walk approximately 10 to 15 minutes west to the beach. The journey from Perth takes under 30 minutes. Bus routes 102, 103, and 107 heading toward Fremantle also pass close to the beach. A car rental provides the most flexibility for combining Cottesloe with other Perth beaches and the Fremantle market.
