Singapore Visa: Requirements, Types and Where to Stay

Singapore is a popular destination for both holidays and international stopovers. Its convenient connections, diverse attractions, and modern cityscape make it an easy addition to many travel itineraries.

Before you plan your journey, check the entry rules that apply to your passport. Depending on your nationality and reason for travelling, you may be able to visit without a visa or may need to arrange a Singapore visa before departure.

Singapore Visa: What You Need to Know

Not every traveller needs a visa to visit Singapore. For those who do, the visa allows them to travel to Singapore and request entry, but it does not determine whether they will be admitted.

At the border, an ICA (Immigration & Checkpoints Authority) officer assesses your entry and issues the appropriate Visit Pass. The length of your permitted stay is therefore separate from how long your visa remains valid.

Keep in mind that the SG Arrival Card and Singapore visa are different documents. The SG Arrival Card is an electronic arrival declaration that eligible travellers need to complete before entering Singapore.

Do You Need a Visa for Singapore?

Whether you need a Singapore visa depends primarily on the travel document you hold. ICA currently lists visa-required travel documents issued by countries and places including India, China-related travel documents in specified circumstances, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Russia, Ukraine, Nigeria, and several others.

If your passport is not from a visa-required country or region, you may generally travel without obtaining an entry visa for a short visit, subject to Singapore's immigration requirements. However, visa-free travel does not mean automatic admission, you still need a valid passport, the required arrival declaration, and must satisfy the immigration officer at the checkpoint.

For transit passengers, Singapore also operates a Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF) for certain eligible nationalities and circumstances. The facility can allow an eligible traveller to remain in Singapore for up to 96 hours, but specific eligibility and onward-travel conditions apply.

For employment, education, or longer-term family stays, you generally need the appropriate immigration pass rather than a tourist entry visa. Depending on your situation, this can include an Employment Pass, S Pass, Work Permit, Student's Pass, or Long-Term Visit Pass.

Types of Singapore Visas and Passes Based on Traveller Type

1. Short-Term and Tourist Travellers

Visa-exempt visitors: If your travel document does not require a Singapore entry visa, you can travel for an eligible short-term visit without applying for a tourist visa beforehand. Your actual period of stay is determined when you enter Singapore.
Visa-required visitors: If your travel document is on ICA's visa-required list, you need an approved Singapore entry visa before travelling. ICA may issue visas with different journey validity depending on the application and circumstances.  ICA
Transit travellers: Eligible passengers may use the VFTF when meeting its specific nationality, routing, and onward-travel requirements. Don't assume that simply having a connecting flight makes you eligible.

2. Business Travellers

For a short business visit, such as attending meetings, negotiations, or conferences, your immigration requirements depend on your nationality and the nature of the activity. If you plan to work in Singapore rather than simply conduct short-term business activities, a separate work pass may be required.

3. Long-Term and Working Travellers

If you're moving to Singapore for employment or education, tourist entry arrangements are not sufficient. Employment Passes, S Passes, Work Permits, and Student's Passes each have separate eligibility criteria and application processes.

How to Apply for a Singapore Visa

If your nationality requires a visa, start by checking the official ICA requirements for your specific travel document. Gather your documents carefully because additional supporting evidence can be requested depending on your circumstances.

Singapore Tourist Visa Requirements

You will generally need:

A completed Form 14A
A passport or travel document with at least six months' validity from your date of entry
A recent passport-sized colour photograph
A clear copy of your passport biodata page
Supporting documents where applicable, such as a Letter of Introduction (LOI)

ICA may request additional documents on a case-by-case basis. The standard visa processing fee is S$30 and is non-refundable, while ICA states that applications are generally processed within three working days, excluding the submission day. Some applications can take longer.

Steps to Apply

A simple application process is:

Check whether your passport requires a Singapore visa.
Review the current ICA requirements for your nationality.
Prepare the application and supporting documents.
Submit the application through the appropriate authorised channel.
Pay the applicable processing fee.
Wait for the application to be processed.
If approved, receive and keep a copy of your electronic visa for your trip.

Fast Facts and Local Rules for International Visitors

Singapore is known for its cleanliness, organisation, and clearly enforced public rules. A little preparation will help you avoid accidentally breaking local regulations.

Don't eat or drink on the MRT. Singapore's Rapid Transit Systems Regulations prohibit consumption of food and drinks on railway premises except in designated places.
Dispose of rubbish properly. Avoid littering and use designated bins.
Smoke only where permitted. Look for designated smoking areas and official signs.
Queue properly. Whether you're boarding public transport or waiting at a popular restaurant, follow the queue.
Don't assume tipping is mandatory. Check your bill first, as service charges and GST may already be included.
Dress appropriately at religious sites. Temples and mosques may have specific clothing requirements, so follow signs and instructions when visiting.
