Bali's underwater dining scene is still pretty exclusive, with just two venues currently doing it properly, so bookings ahead of time are a must if you want a table by the glass.

Koral is Bali's original aquarium restaurant. It is tucked inside the five-star Apurva Kempinski on the Nusa Dua cliffs, where diners sit beside (or inside a tunnel through) a massive tank filled with tropical fish and the occasional visit from a scuba diver waving hello. 

The menu leans into Indonesian coastal flavours with a refined, modern twist, and regular tables start from around IDR 1,200,000 to IDR 1,500,000++ (~AU$ 120–AU$ 150) per adult for the set menu. The premium 360-degree underwater tunnel tables do carry a strict minimum spend of about IDR 3,000,000 (roughly AU$ 300) per person. 

The dress code is smart casual (no flip-flops, no sleeveless tops for the blokes), and it's genuinely one of the most romantic dinner settings on the island, so book well ahead for date nights or anniversaries.

Children under 12 are only permitted during lunchtime. The evening dinner service is an adults-only environment. 

Varuna takes things up a notch by combining dinner with a full theatrical show, staged inside an illuminated aquarium at Taman Safari Bali's Marine Park. You also can see dancers and acrobats in aquatic costumes performing a story about the ocean while you eat. 

It's more of a family-friendly, only-in-Bali spectacle than a quiet romantic dinner, with packages ranging from a simple set menu right up to a five-course tasting, starting from around AU$ 60 per person depending on the package. 

Since it's inside a wildlife park roughly 40 minutes from Ubud, it pairs nicely with a full day out seeing the animals before the show.

These picks are all close to Koral in Nusa Dua and Varuna in Gianyar of Bali's two underwater dining spots. 

The Apurva Kempinski Bali is about as close as you can get to Koral, since the restaurant is actually inside this hotel, meaning zero travel time for dinner and easy access if you fancy a lunch sitting too. It's a proper five-star cliffside resort with 465 rooms and villas, multiple pools, a full spa, and five other restaurants to explore during your stay. Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort is around a 5 to 10-minute drive from Koral. This beachfront resort is a great pick if you want direct beach access alongside your underwater dinner plans. Expect four outdoor pools, a lazy river, a full-service spa, and French-inspired design touches throughout the 413 rooms and suites. Hotel Santika Siligita Nusa Dua is about a 10-minute drive from Koral. This mid-range hotel is tucked into the quieter Siligita area of Nusa Dua, making it a solid base if you want a bit of peace away from the main tourist strip. It offers a swimming pool, an on-site restaurant, and consistently friendly service without the five-star price tag. Rates typically start from around AU$ 58 to AU$ 229 per night.

Mara River Safari Lodge sits inside the grounds of Taman Safari Bali itself, roughly a 10-minute walk from Varuna and the Marine Park entrance. It's an African-themed resort with open-air terraces looking straight onto roaming zebras and giraffes, an outdoor pool, and its own on-site restaurant, making it a genuinely unique stay for animal lovers and families. Wyndham Tamansari Jivva Resort Bali is about a 9-minute drive from Varuna. This beachfront resort on Bali's quieter east coast is the pick if you want a private black-sand beach to unwind after the show. A few practical things to sort out before you go, since both venues run on limited seating and it's easy to miss out if you leave it too late.

Book Koral at least a few weeks ahead if you're after a tunnel table, since these are the most photogenic (and most requested) spots in the whole restaurant. Reservations can be made directly through the Kempinski website or via the restaurant's contact details. It's worth mentioning any special occasion when booking, since the team is known for adding a little extra touch for anniversaries and birthdays. 

For Varuna, book through Taman Safari Bali's official site or platforms like Traveloka, and try to time your visit around the day or evening show schedule, since seating is arranged by staff based on your package.

Bring a light jacket or shawl to either venue, since the air conditioning is kept cool to protect the fish and keep the tanks at the right temperature, and it can catch you off guard after a hot Bali afternoon. Both restaurants photograph beautifully, so if a special-occasion photo is on your list, let the staff know in advance. They're generally happy to help you get the shot without disturbing other diners.
