Egypt Visa for Australians: e-Visa and Visa on Arrival Guide 2026

A visa is required to enter Egypt, but getting one is about as low-friction as it gets. You can apply online and receive an approved e-visa PDF to your email in three to seven business days, or you can pick one up at the airport bank kiosk on arrival for USD 25 cash. Either option grants a 30-day stay. Most travellers choose the e-visa to skip the arrival queue — wait times at Cairo airport's visa counters can stretch to 45 minutes or more on busy international arrival days.

Option 1: Egypt e-Visa (Apply Before You Fly)

Option 2: Visa on Arrival

Available at Egyptian international airports including Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor, and Marsa Alam. Purchase a visa sticker from the bank kiosk in the arrivals hall before proceeding to the immigration counter. The cost is USD 25 per person, cash only — USD is the preferred currency and exact change speeds things up, as change is typically given in Egyptian pounds.

If you are arriving at Sharm el-Sheikh and only staying within the Sinai Peninsula resort zone, a free entry stamp is available for stays of up to 15 days. This is not a tourist visa — it restricts your movement to the Sinai area only. If you want to visit Cairo, Luxor, or anywhere outside the Sinai, you need the full USD 25 visa.

Entry Requirements

Valid Australian passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity and at least one blank page for the visa stamp
Confirmed return or onward ticket
Accommodation booking or host contact details
Your approved e-visa PDF, or USD 25 in cash for visa on arrival

Arrival Tips

If using the visa on arrival, carry clean, undamaged USD bills — worn or torn notes are sometimes rejected at the bank kiosk
Egyptian pounds cannot be used to pay for the visa on arrival, even if you have already exchanged currency
Save your e-visa PDF to your phone as well as printing it — immigration occasionally asks to see it digitally at the counter
