Bangkok has long been one of the most popular short- to medium-haul destinations for Australian travelers. Its relatively close proximity, with direct flights from major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, makes Thailand’s capital an ideal choice for a getaway.

For first-time visitors, the city can also serve as a starting point for continuing your journey to other destinations in Thailand. If you only have a few days in Bangkok, start by checking out the following things to do in Bangkok.

What to Do in Bangkok?

When planning your itinerary, deciding on a list of things to do in Bangkok can be a challenge in itself due to the abundance of interesting places to visit. Here are some of the main activities you shouldn’t miss:

1. Visit the Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. The complex consists of various royal buildings and boasts a history spanning more than 200 years. Within the complex lies the Emerald Buddha, or Phra Kaew, one of Thailand’s most important religious sites.

Since this is a religious and royal complex, visitors must wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. It’s best to arrive early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.

2. Cruise the Chao Phraya River on a Boat Tour

Enjoy the experience of riding the Chao Phraya Express Boat or a traditional wooden long-tail boat as you cruise through the small canals. This water journey offers a different perspective on the lives of local communities along the riverbanks and the city’s landmarks illuminated at night.

3. See the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho

Not far from the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, famous for its 46-meter-long, gold-plated reclining Buddha statue. This temple is also known as one of the most important sites in the history of traditional Thai massage. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho can be visited as part of a single itinerary since they are located close to each other.

4. Admire Wat Arun

Wat Arun is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River and features a tower that is one of Bangkok’s most iconic sights.

The intricate details of the temple’s architecture make it fascinating to view up close, while its riverside location offers a unique perspective compared to other temples in Bangkok.

5. Hunt for Souvenirs at Night Markets and Modern Malls

Bangkok is a shopping paradise for every type of traveler. Stop by the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world’s largest weekend markets, with over 15,000 stalls selling everything from clothing and antiques to handicrafts. If you enjoy visiting malls, check out ICONSIAM. This ultra-luxurious riverside mall features an indoor floating market where you can comfortably buy local snacks.

What to Eat in Bangkok

No discussion of what to do in Bangkok would be complete without sampling the delights of its cuisine, rich in sour, spicy, sweet, and savory flavors.

Kuay Teow

Rice noodles served in a savory broth with a choice of meat, seafood, vegetables, and other toppings. This dish is perfect for warming your stomach while exploring Bangkok’s nighttime food scene.

Tom Yum Goong

A classic Thai shrimp soup featuring a blend of sour, spicy, and savory flavors, with a strong herbal aroma. This dish is widely available at street-side stalls and is a must-try among Thai dishes.

Pad Thai

Rice noodles stir-fried with tofu, shrimp, bean sprouts, and traditional Thai seasonings, then served topped with roasted peanuts. The flavor is a blend of savory, sweet, sour, and slightly spicy.

Som Tam

A traditional Thai green papaya salad made with shredded green papaya, lime juice, chili peppers, and dried shrimp. It has a fresh, sour, spicy, and slightly savory flavor.

Mango Sticky Rice

Soft, chewy sticky rice with a savory and sweet flavor from coconut milk, served with fresh mango slices. The combination of the sticky rice’s soft texture, coconut milk sauce, and sweet mango makes this a popular dessert.

Bangkok Visa Requirements for Australian Travelers

Australian passport holders are included on the list of countries eligible for a 30-day visa exemption to enter Thailand for tourism purposes, effective September 15, 2026.

In addition to meeting the visa exemption requirements, travelers must have a passport valid for at least six months and may be asked to show proof of accommodation, sufficient funds, and an outbound ticket or onward flight.

Australian travelers are also required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within three days prior to arrival. The TDAC is not the same as a visa and is free of charge. Since immigration regulations are subject to change, always check the latest requirements from Thai authorities before departing.
