One of China’s busiest and most modern airports, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport offers efficient facilities, impressive architecture, and excellent connectivity to destinations across Asia and beyond. However, it’s more than just a place to catch your connecting flight — with a range of dining options with delicious Cantonese dishes, comfortable lounges and quiet areas, as well as stopover hotels, there are plenty of ways to relax, especially when you have a longer layover.

Plus, did we mention you may be able to book a free stay at a stopover hotel? Read on for everything you need to know about where to snooze when you’re at Guangzhou Airport.

Free places to sleep at Guangzhou Airport

If your layover is long enough that you’ll want to rest up, there are a few free ways for travellers to get some shut-eye — no sleeping on the ground needed.

Free stopover hotel

For China Southern Airlines’ transfer passengers who are transiting through Guangzhou Baiyun Airport with a layover time between 6 and 30 hours, you may be eligible for a free one-night stay at a stopover hotel, with a free breakfast — the dream layover situation, really.

You’ll need to meet the following requirements:

Have a valid China Southern Airlines flight with a same-day or overnight transit in Guangzhou
Have a layover time between 6 to 30 hours (inclusive)

Once you’ve met these requirements, you can book your free stopover hotel online here. Online bookings open 180 days before your trip and will close 24 hours before your scheduled arrival in Guangzhou. You can also visit the China Southern Airlines’ transfer accommodation counter (Gate 50, Floor 1, Terminal 2, Domestic Arrivals) at the airport, where the on-site staff will assist you with your booking.

Across Benches

While there are no official designated sleeping zones at Guangzhou Airport, the airport is open 24 hours — so in theory you can stay there overnight. There are some seating areas that are armrest free so you can lie across them. Don’t expect a five-star stay though, but if you need something that’ll tie you over until your flight, this is definitely an option.

Things to consider when using sleeping across benches

Comfort: Sleeping across benches or chairs aren’t nearly as comfortable as sleeping on a proper bed. So, set your expectations accordingly.
Privacy: There’s not a lot of privacy when sleeping in an open area anywhere…and this is definitely true in an airport. While most passengers will keep to themselves, you’ll find privacy is pretty limited with this option.
Noise: Similar to privacy, noise can be a disruptive. Announcements, excited chatter, airport music, as well as general airport sounds will be present. If you’re a light sleeper, this is definitely something worth noting.
Safety: While Guangzhou is generally a very safe city, keeping your valuables as secure as possible when sleeping at the airport is important. Keep your phone, wallet, passport and keys close by, preferably in an inside jacket pocket so you’ll be woken up if anything suspicious happens.

Tips to elevate the sleeping experience at the Guangzhou Airport

Bring necessities: If you’re planning to sleep in an open area within the airport, make sure to bring a travel or neck pillow, earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones, an eyemask, as well as comfy clothes.
Select your location carefully: Observe where foot traffic is in the airport and avoid when picking out a location to sleep. Quiet spots away from crowds will make a huge difference.
Use a timer: Set an alarm (or a few) to ensure you wake up in time for your connecting flight. If you can, make sure your phone also vibrates with the alarm incase your earplugs are working a bit too well.
Stay at a free stopover hotel (if you’re travelling with China Southern Airlines): As mentioned, for eligible China Southern Airlines customers, you can skip the hassle (and potential back pain) and book a free stopover hotel.
Bite the bullet and opt for a pay-per-use lounge airport hotel: If comfort and rest is at the top of your list, then paying for a pay-per-use lounge or an airport hotel may be your best bet.

Pay-per-use lounges

There are a few pay-per-use lounges and rest facilities at Guangzhou Airport. These lounges are places to rest for longer layovers, with facilities like basic showers, nap rooms or suites, usually charged by the hour.
