Banyuwangi Airport is in Blimbingsari village, Rogojampi district, Banyuwangi Regency, at the eastern tip of Java.
Yes. Blimbingsari was the airport's earlier name, taken from the village where it stands. Both names refer to BWX.
The drive to central Banyuwangi usually takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Super Air Jet flies to Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, and Wings Air flies to Surabaya.
The terminal, designed by Andra Matin, is an open building inspired by Osing architecture. It uses natural ventilation, shade and grass-covered roofs instead of relying mainly on air conditioning.
Yes. It is the closest airport to the Ijen volcano complex, and many Ijen tours offer pickups from the airport.
There is no regular flight to Bali, but the Ketapang ferry port north of Banyuwangi town crosses to Gilimanuk in western Bali.

Banyuwangi Airport, code BWX, sits at the eastern end of Java, close to the strait that separates the island from Bali. It was long known as Blimbingsari Airport, after the village where it stands, and some booking sites still use that name. Commercial flights began in 2010, and the airport has since become the main air gateway for travellers heading to Ijen and the rest of Banyuwangi Regency.
The airport lies in Blimbingsari village, Rogojampi district, south of Banyuwangi town. Published distances to the town centre vary a little, but the drive usually takes around half an hour. That makes it easy to land in the morning and be at a hotel in town, or on the road towards Ijen, well before lunch.
The terminal is the part most visitors remember. Designed by the Indonesian architect Andra Matin, it borrows from the traditional architecture of the local Osing people. Rather than a sealed glass box, it is an open building that relies on cross-breezes, shade and courtyards to stay cool, so it needs far less air conditioning than a typical terminal.
Look up as you arrive and you will see grass growing on the sloping roofs, which help keep the interior shaded. Timber screens filter the sunlight along the walkways, and there are separate roof sections for departures and arrivals. The building is compact, with food stalls and seating, and it is easy to find your way around.
Two airlines currently serve the airport. Super Air Jet flies jets on the route to Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, which is the fastest way to reach the capital. Wings Air runs turboprop services to Surabaya. The airport has handled international flights in the past, but it mainly serves domestic routes, so check the latest schedule if you hope to fly abroad from here.
Most visitors come for the Ijen volcano complex, known for its turquoise crater lake and the night hikes to see its blue flames. Alas Purwo National Park, on the southeastern peninsula, offers forest, beaches and surf. The ferry port at Ketapang, north of town, links Java with Gilimanuk on Bali, so Banyuwangi works well as a stop on an overland Java–Bali trip.
If you plan an Ijen night hike, avoid booking a flight early the next morning, as tours often return after sunrise. Flights to Surabaya do not run every day, so check the days of operation before building an itinerary around them.
