Named after South African statesman Oliver Reginald Tambo, the airport sits in Kempton Park, around 20 km east of central Johannesburg. It's one of the busiest airports in Africa, handling well over 18 million passengers a year, with capacity to handle up to 28 million passengers annually following recent terminal and runway upgrades.
JNB connects Johannesburg to major domestic destinations such as Cape Town and Durban, regional routes across Southern and East Africa, and long-haul international routes to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
O.R. Tambo is the home hub of South African Airways, and is also a base for regional carriers including Airlink, CemAir, FlySafair, and LIFT.
The airport operates two main terminals: Terminal A, which handles international flights, and Terminal B, used for domestic flights and South African Airways check-in.
The Gautrain high-speed rail link has its own station inside the airport, with direct trains to Sandton in around 12 to 15 minutes and onward connections to Johannesburg Park Station and Pretoria. Buses, shuttles, taxis, and rideshares are also available for those heading elsewhere in the city.
Travellers will find shops, restaurants, and lounges throughout the terminals, along with free Wi-Fi and information desks to help with any queries.
