Tan Son Nhat is about 6 to 8 kilometres from the centre around Ben Thanh Market. Journey times depend heavily on traffic.
Tan Son Nhat has three passenger terminals. Terminal 2 handles international flights, while Terminals 1 and 3 handle domestic flights.
Terminal 3 is a few kilometres from Terminals 1 and 2 by road. A shuttle bus links them, so allow extra time when transferring.
Bus 109 runs between Tan Son Nhat and Ben Thanh in the city centre. Buses also stop at Terminal 3.
Yes. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and metered taxis pick up outside the arrivals halls at Tan Son Nhat.
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air both run large operations at Tan Son Nhat, alongside many foreign airlines on international routes.
The code SGN comes from Saigon, the former name of Ho Chi Minh City that is still widely used today.
Yes. Terminal 2 at Tan Son Nhat handles international flights to destinations across Asia and further afield.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is the main air gateway to Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam. The airfield dates back to the French colonial era of the 1920s and is now one of the country's two principal hubs, handling both domestic flights across Vietnam and international services around Asia and beyond.
Unusually for a major airport, Tan Son Nhat sits inside the city itself, in the former Tan Binh district. The centre around Ben Thanh Market and the old District 1 is roughly 6 to 8 kilometres away, although traffic can make that short hop take longer than you expect.
The airport runs three passenger terminals:
Domestic airlines have been assigned to different terminals, so check your booking before you set off.
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air both run large operations here, with frequent flights to Hanoi, Da Nang, Phu Quoc and other cities. A wide range of foreign carriers also fly into Terminal 2, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with major hubs across Asia and further afield. Check the latest schedule for your route.
Bus 109 runs from the airport to Ben Thanh in the heart of the city, and buses also serve Terminal 3. Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Grab pick up outside arrivals, and are the easiest choice with heavy luggage. Allow extra time during the evening rush.
Ben Thanh Market, the Saigon Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral are close together in the centre. The War Remnants Museum is nearby, and day trips run to the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta.
If you are connecting between a domestic and an international flight, leave plenty of time, especially when Terminal 3 is involved. Roads around the airport get congested, so set off early for departures.
