More about hotels in El Tarf
More than 60,000 migratory birds gather on Lake Tonga each winter, inside El Kala National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that covers the Mediterranean edge of El Tarf province. The park also holds Algeria's only cork oak forest, plus Lake Oubeira and Lake Mellah, a rare coastal lagoon still connected to the open sea. Add close to 40 kilometres of coastline and you get a province built for wetlands and beaches rather than big-city sightseeing.
It's a low-key destination, so don't expect a resort strip. There's still a stay to match here, close to the park gates or right on the sand.
Where to stay in El Tarf
- El Kala. This is the national park's gateway town, and the closest base to Lake Mellah and the birdwatching trails around Lake Tonga and Lake Oubeira. It's a working fishing port too, so expect a working town rather than a polished tourist strip. Good pick if the park is the main reason for the trip.
- Ben M'Hidi. A beach town further along the coast, and home to El Tarf's water park resort. A simpler choice if you're after sand and a pool rather than wetland trails. See hotels in Ben M'Hidi.
How much is El Tarf accommodation?
Rooms in El Tarf start from around AU$106 a night at Ben M'Hidi's beachfront resort, and that's close to the ceiling too. This is a small market with a handful of properties rather than a full spread of budget-to-luxury tiers, so treat any price you see as a snapshot rather than a fixed rate. Availability is the bigger constraint than price. With so few rooms in the whole province, a sold-out night is more likely here than in a bigger destination, so lock in dates as soon as your travel plans firm up rather than leaving it to the last minute.
Hotels in El Tarf
El Tarf's hotel supply is genuinely small, and it's worth saying that upfront rather than dressing up four listings as a big selection.
- Golden Beach Aqua Park, Ben M'Hidi. A beachfront property built around its own water park, which makes it the obvious pick for families travelling with kids. View Golden Beach Aqua Park.
- Golden Beach Aqua Resort, Ben M'Hidi. A sister property right next door, on the same stretch of coast, for when the first is full. View Golden Beach Aqua Resort.
- El Manar, El Kala. A straightforward hotel close to town and the shortest drive to the park entrance, useful if you want to be out on the lakes early. View El Manar.
- Hotel El Manar, El Tarf. A sister property with a restaurant, a terrace and multilingual staff on site. View Hotel El Manar.
Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in El Tarf
- Book ahead for birdwatching trips. Winter brings the biggest numbers of migratory birds to Lake Tonga, and it's also when El Tarf's small pool of rooms fills fastest.
- Check availability before you lock in dates. With only a few properties in the whole province, rooms can show as sold out weeks ahead.
- Base yourself on what you're doing there, not on price alone. El Kala saves you a drive to the park. Ben M'Hidi suits a beach-first trip.
- Fly into Annaba's Rabah Bitat Airport. It's the closest airport to El Tarf, roughly 45 kilometres away, and most visitors reach the province through it.
- Pack for both wetland and coast. Mornings around the lakes can be cool and damp even when the beaches are warm and dry.
- Bring your own binoculars if birdwatching is the plan. El Kala is a small town and gear rental isn't something to rely on.
- If El Tarf is fully booked, Annaba, the nearest larger city, has a wider spread of accommodation and works as a base for day trips into the park.
El Tarf won't give you a big hotel scene, but it's one of the few places where you can watch flamingos over breakfast and swim in the Mediterranean by lunch. Plan around the park and the coast, book early, and the limited choice of rooms matters a lot less.
