More about hotels in Alberta

Alberta packs two very different holidays into one province. In the west, the Rockies rise up sharp and glacier-fed around Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Head east and the mountains give way to prairie cities with their own draws, Calgary's rodeo culture and Edmonton's mall-sized indoor amusement park among them. Few places let you swap a hiking trail for a rollercoaster in the space of a single road trip.

Mountain lodge with a view, a downtown hotel close to the action, or something playful for the kids: there's a stay in Alberta to match. Here's where to look, what it costs in AU$, and which properties are actually worth booking.

Where to stay in Alberta

  • Banff: the classic base, a small alpine town ringed by peaks, with the Sulphur Mountain gondola and the Banff Upper Hot Springs, Canada's highest mineral pools, both a short walk from the main street.
  • Canmore: 20 minutes down the highway from Banff, with the same mountain backdrop for noticeably less per night. A good pick if you don't want to pay Banff prices to reach the same trails.
  • Lake Louise: a tiny hamlet built around the turquoise lake itself, and the closest base for Moraine Lake and the Lake Louise Ski Resort.
  • Jasper: further north and quieter than Banff, with a wilder national park feel and some of the darkest night skies in the Rockies for stargazing.
  • Calgary: Alberta's biggest city, with a downtown that empties into the Bow River pathways and, every July, fills up completely for the Calgary Stampede's ten days of rodeo and chuckwagon racing.
  • Edmonton: home to West Edmonton Mall, with an indoor amusement park and wave pool under one roof, plus the North Saskatchewan River valley parkland right behind it.

How much is Alberta accommodation?

A typical night across the province runs around AU$255, though where you land depends heavily on the season and how close you are to the peaks.

  • Backpackers & hostels: from AU$45 a night. Dorm beds in Banff and Canmore, popular with seasonal ski staff and budget hikers.
  • Budget hotels & guesthouses: from AU$115 a night. Simple motels in Calgary, Edmonton, Jasper and Drumheller, fine for a base you're not spending much time in.
  • Mid-range & apartments: from AU$230 a night. Chain hotels and serviced apartments in the city centres, and mid-tier lodges on the edge of Banff and Jasper.
  • Boutique: from AU$320 a night. Design-led hotels in downtown Calgary, generally walking distance to the best restaurants.
  • Luxury & resorts: from AU$480 a night, climbing well past AU$1,000 in the July-August peak. This is the historic railway-hotel tier: stone towers, golf courses and full-service spas.

Top-rated hotels in Alberta

  • Fairmont Banff Springs: a stone castle built into the mountainside in 1888, with its own golf course and an outdoor rink that freezes over for winter skating.
  • Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge: cabins and a lodge spread across 700 acres on the shore of Lac Beauvert, with canoes for hire right off the boathouse.
  • Fairmont Palliser: Calgary's grand old railway hotel from 1914, still standing downtown with its original marble lobby intact.
  • Hotel Le Germain Calgary: a newer, design-led stay across from the Calgary Tower, with a rooftop terrace and one of the city's better hotel restaurants downstairs.
  • Fantasyland Hotel: built right into West Edmonton Mall, with theme rooms like the Space Room and the Dino Room that turn a stay into part of the trip for families.

Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in Alberta

  • Book Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper months ahead for July-August or the Christmas-New Year ski window. Rooms sell out and prices roughly double against shoulder season.
  • Base yourself in Canmore instead of Banff if you're watching your budget. It's the same trailheads and gondolas, a short drive away, for a lot less per night.
  • Check which ski resort your hotel actually sits closest to before you book a "ski-in" stay. Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt Norquay are three separate mountains with their own shuttle routes.
  • Filter for free parking. Most Rockies towns are built around cars, and paid lots in Banff townsite add up fast over a multi-night stay.
  • Rent a car if you can. Distances between Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper are bigger than they look on a map, and there's limited public transport connecting the towns.

Flying into Calgary keeps you closest to the mountains. Flying into Edmonton suits a trip that starts or ends at the mall, or heads out to the badlands around Drumheller and its fossil museum. Either way, lock in your stay early for summer and you'll get first pick of where to sleep.

The staff was helpful in helping us arrange for 2-way airport transfer. The first time was to pick us up back to the hotel after returning the car we rented (we requested their help during check in) and again when we went to the airport the next morning. Staff were helpful and pick up was smooth. There’s a microwave in the room which you can heat up food (limited food options around the vicinity); we ordered Uber Eats for dinner. Water was hot and the room is quiet. Would recommend for anyone who needs to rest up before the airport.
