My family and I enjoyed our stay here, and the staff, including Paul Zhu and Amy, were very friendly. I had my elderly parents with me, who needed special assistance due to their wheelchair. If I return to the city, this hotel will likely be my choice. Access to the MRT and surrounding areas is also very convenient.

More about hotels in Chongqing

Staying in a hotel in Chongqing, China, offers a unique blend of modern comfort and rich cultural experience. Built across steep hillsides where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, Chongqing is nicknamed China's "8D city" for the way its roads, bridges and metro lines stack across multiple levels. The city's food scene centres on huoguo, the fiery mala hotpot loaded with chilli, Sichuan peppercorn and beef tallow that put Chongqing on the culinary map nationwide. Add in its bustling streets and dramatic river views, and Chongqing's hotels promise a warm welcome and a memorable stay in this dynamic, multi-layered metropolis, whether you're visiting for business or leisure.

Where to stay when booking a hotel in Chongqing

  • Jiefangbei: Known as the heart of Chongqing, Jiefangbei is bustling with shopping centres, restaurants, and nightlife, making it perfect for those who love being in the centre of the action.
  • Hongyadong: Built into the cliffside above the Jialing River, this area is known for its diaojiaolou, traditional stilt houses stacked up to eleven storeys high, alongside modern shops and restaurants. Lit up after dark, it's one of Chongqing's most photographed spots and ideal for those who appreciate cultural experiences.
  • Nanbin Road: Famous for its scenic Yangtze riverside views and a food scene built around Chongqing's signature spicy hotpot restaurants, Nanbin Road is great for foodies and those who enjoy leisurely strolls along the river. It also sits near the Nan'an landing point of the Yangtze River Cableway, the cross-river cable car that's been carrying locals and sightseers over the water since the 1980s.
  • Shapingba: Home to several universities and cultural sites, Shapingba is a lively area with a youthful vibe, perfect for those interested in history and academia.
  • Yuzhong District: As the central business district, Yuzhong offers a mix of modern skyscrapers and historical sites, plus one of Chongqing's most photographed oddities: Liziba Station, where the light rail runs straight through the sixth to eighth floors of a residential tower. It's a fitting introduction to a district that mixes everyday city life with convenience for business travellers and tourists seeking variety.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Chongqing

Do Australian citizens need a visa to visit Chongqing?

Visa rules for Australian passport holders visiting mainland China can change, and China has introduced visa-free and short-stay transit options for various nationalities in recent years. Check the latest requirements with the Chinese embassy or a licensed visa agent before booking your trip to Chongqing, and make sure your passport has enough validity left for entry.

When is the best time to visit Chongqing?

Chongqing is one of China's warmest cities in summer, with hot, humid conditions from June to August that can make sightseeing tiring. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring milder temperatures and clearer skies, making these seasons the most comfortable time to explore the city and enjoy your hotel's outdoor spaces.

How do you get around a hilly city like Chongqing?

Chongqing's unique multi-level layout means footpaths, escalators and stairs are part of everyday travel, so comfortable walking shoes go a long way. The city's monorail and metro lines are an easy way to cover longer distances without the climbing, and many hotels sit close to a station for convenient access.

What currency and payment methods are used in Chongqing?

The local currency is the Chinese yuan (CNY), and mobile payment apps are used almost everywhere, from restaurants to taxis. It's a good idea to carry a small amount of cash as backup and check with your hotel or bank about setting up a mobile payment option before you arrive.

Many of these attractions are easy to reach from central hotel areas by metro, making it simple to plan a relaxed day out with kids.

What day trips can you take from Chongqing?

The Dazu Rock Carvings, a collection of intricate stone sculptures recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage art and architecture site, make a popular half-day or full-day trip from the city. Multi-day Yangtze River cruises departing from Chongqing are another popular option, taking in dramatic gorge scenery over several days before ending in cities further downstream.

Will I have trouble communicating in Chongqing if I don't speak Mandarin?

English signage is limited outside major hotels and tourist spots, so downloading a translation app before your trip is a smart idea. Many hotel staff in popular tourist areas can manage basic English, and simple gestures or translation apps make ordering food and getting around straightforward.

What local food should I try in Chongqing besides hotpot?

Chongqing's food scene stretches well beyond hotpot, with xiao mian, a spicy noodle soup, a beloved local breakfast dish. Street snacks like spicy skewers and grilled tofu are easy to find near shopping areas, giving visitors plenty of tasty ways to sample the city's famously bold flavours.

Are there good hotel areas near Chongqing's airport or train stations?

If you have an early flight or are arriving by train, staying near Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport or Chongqing North Railway Station can save travel time. Both areas have a good range of hotels and easy connections into the city centre by metro, making them practical choices for short stopovers.

Will my phone and apps work normally in Chongqing?

Local SIM cards and eSIMs are widely available and make it easy to stay connected during your stay. Some international apps and websites are not accessible in mainland China, so many travellers set up a VPN or download offline maps and translation tools before their trip.
