More about hotels in Bremen
Bremen doesn't shout for attention the way Berlin or Munich do, and that's exactly its charm. Four bronze animals stacked on top of each other, the Town Musicians of Bremen, have become the unofficial mascot of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale that never actually finished here. In the story, the donkey, dog, cat and rooster were on their way to Bremen to become musicians but never made it into the city at all. A few streets over you'll find Böttcherstraße, a single curving lane of Expressionist brick architecture built in the 1920s, and the Schnoor, a tangle of narrow lanes lined with fifteenth and sixteenth century timber-framed houses that have somehow survived into the present as cafes, craft shops and tiny galleries.
It's a working river city too. Barges and pleasure boats still move along the Weser, the old harbour district has been quietly rebuilding itself into a proper waterfront neighbourhood, and Beck's has been brewing beer here since 1873, with a museum and tasting tour open to visitors most days. Pick a base near the old quarter for atmosphere, or closer to the river for something newer and quieter, and you're set for a good few days here.
Where to stay in Bremen
- Schnoor: Bremen's oldest quarter, all cobbles and crooked timber houses. Good for a night or two if you want to fall out of bed straight into the prettiest part of town.
- Mitte (City Centre): Right on the Marktplatz, with the Rathaus and the Town Musicians statue on your doorstep. The easy choice if you'd rather walk everywhere than plan transport.
- Das Viertel: Bremen's arty, late-opening district, full of indie cafes, secondhand bookshops and bars that don't switch the lights on until well after dinner. Stay here for Bremen's night-time side, not just the postcard version.
- Überseestadt: The old harbour, rebuilt into a waterfront strip of newer hotels, restaurants and apartments. A calmer, more modern base with the Weser right outside.
- Findorff: Leafy and residential, backing onto Bürgerpark. Suits a slower trip, or anyone travelling with kids who wants green space close by.
How much is Bremen accommodation?
Rooms in Bremen are genuinely reasonable by European city standards, with options from around AU$44 a night right up to riverside four-star stays. Here's roughly what each tier gets you.
- Backpackers/Hostels: From AU$25 per night for a dorm bed. Most cluster near the Hauptbahnhof (main station), an easy walk or short tram ride from the old quarter.
- Budget hotels/Guesthouses: From AU$90 per night. Simple, clean rooms, usually a short tram trip out rather than right on top of the centre.
- Mid-range/Apartments: From AU$150 per night. This is where you start getting more space, sometimes a kitchenette, and a genuinely central address.
- Boutique: From AU$200 per night. Smaller, design-led properties, often in a converted building in Das Viertel or near the Schnoor.
- Luxury: From AU$290 per night. Full-service hotels with spas, pools and river views, mostly clustered around the city centre and the Weser.

Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in Bremen
- Book ahead around Freimarkt (Bremen's big autumn fair, held every October) or the Christmas markets in December. Rooms fill fast and prices climb during both.
- Staying near the Hauptbahnhof puts you within walking distance of the old town and gives you an easy run out to Bremen Airport or onward by train.
- Keen on the Beck's brewery tour? A room in Mitte or Überseestadt keeps you a short walk or tram ride from the meeting point down by the river.
- Trams and buses cover the whole city well, so you don't need to be right in the centre to get around easily. A slightly cheaper room a few stops out can save you a fair bit without costing much time.
- Check whether breakfast is included. Bremen's hotel breakfasts tend to be a genuine highlight rather than an afterthought, and skipping one to eat out can cost you more.
Pair your stay with a day along the Weser or a wander through Bürgerpark, and you've got a solid, unhurried few days in one of Germany's more underrated cities.
