I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Tanakaya Hotel in Kyoto for a two-night getaway, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. Tucked away not far from Gojo Station, this exclusive boutique hotel offers an unparalleled experience in hospitality and luxury. From the moment I stepped into the lobby, I was greeted with warmth and genuine hospitality. The staff at Tanakaya Hotel Kyoto are truly exceptional, going above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels welcomed and attended to throughout their stay. Upon entering my room, I was immediately struck by the seamless blend of modern amenities and traditional Kyoto-Japanese artistry. The decoration was elegant yet understated, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere that instantly put me at ease. The attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the room, from the meticulously crafted furnishings to the exquisite artwork adorning the walls. One of the highlights of my stay was the bathroom—a true oasis of relaxation and indulgence. The bathtub was a masterpiece in itself, inviting me to unwind and soak away the stresses of the day. The bathroom, like the rest of the room, was impeccably designed and maintained, further enhancing the overall sense of luxury and comfort. Throughout my stay, I found myself continually impressed by the level of care and thoughtfulness that went into every aspect of the hotel. Whether it was the impeccable cleanliness, the attentive service, or the thoughtful amenities provided, Tanakaya Hotel Kyoto truly sets the standard for excellence in hospitality. In conclusion, my experience at Tanakaya Hotel Kyoto was nothing short of exceptional. From the top-notch hospitality to the beautiful room and amenities, every aspect of my stay exceeded my expectations. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough to anyone looking for a luxurious and unforgettable experience in Kyoto.

More about hotels in Kansai

About Kansai hotels

Kansai squeezes a long list of Japan's biggest drawcards into one compact region. Osaka serves up neon signs and street food that never seems to stop, Kyoto keeps a tunnel of thousands of vermilion gates climbing straight up a hillside, Nara lets deer wander loose through its main park, and Kobe pairs a million-dollar mountain view with the country's most famous beef. Add Himeji's dazzling white castle less than an hour away and you've got a region built for train hopping.

Best part is you don't need to pick just one base. Kansai's rail links are fast and frequent, so wherever you sleep, the rest of the region is usually less than an hour away. Here's where to stay, what it costs, and how to pick a spot that works for your trip.

Where to stay in Kansai

  • Osaka: Kansai's biggest hub and its most fun. Dotonbori's canal-side neon and takoyaki stalls run late, Osaka Castle's green-tiled tower sits behind a proper moat in the middle of the city, and Universal Studios Japan is a quick train ride out. Stay here for nightlife, food and the easiest airport links.
  • Kyoto: Slower, older, and dense with things worth seeing. Fushimi Inari's torii gates form an orange tunnel up the mountain, Kinkaku-ji is a pavilion coated in gold leaf and mirrored in its own pond, and Arashiyama's bamboo grove turns the light green overhead. Gion's lantern-lit lanes and timber facades are worth a wander after dinner too.
  • Nara: A short hop from Osaka or Kyoto, and worth the trip on its own. Nara Park's deer roam free and will happily pose for a photo, and Todai-ji's Great Buddha, one of the largest bronze statues on earth, sits inside one of the biggest wooden buildings in the world. Good for a day trip or a quieter overnight stay.
  • Kobe: Squeezed between Mount Rokko and the harbour, Kobe trades big-city buzz for bay views and a slower pace. Come for the night view from the mountain, a wander around Harborland, and a plate of Kobe beef that lives up to the hype.
  • Himeji: Home to Himeji Castle, the best-preserved original castle in Japan, with white plastered walls and a maze of paths that make it easy to get pleasantly lost. Most people visit on a day trip from Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe, but staying overnight means you get the castle grounds without the tour groups.

How much is Kansai accommodation?

Prices move around depending on which city you're in and when. Kyoto runs a touch pricier than the rest, especially in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season, while Nara and Himeji tend to be cheaper than Osaka or Kobe. Across the region, expect to pay somewhere around AU$110 a night on average.

  • Backpackers and hostels: From AU$20 per night. Capsule beds and shared bathrooms near major stations in Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe. Solid option if you're moving between cities every couple of days.
  • Budget hotels: From AU$55 per night. Small, clean rooms with a vending machine down the hall and a station within walking distance. Common in Osaka, Nara and Himeji.
  • Mid-range hotels: From AU$100 per night. More space, on-site breakfast and sometimes a bathhouse downstairs. This is where most of Kyoto's machiya-style stays and Kobe's harbour hotels sit.
  • Boutique stays: From AU$170 per night. Design-led rooms, smaller properties, often close to Gion, Higashiyama or Dotonbori.
  • Luxury hotels and ryokans: From AU$330 per night. Skyline suites in Osaka, hinoki tubs and kaiseki dinners in Kyoto, or a private onsen looking over the hills.

Top-rated hotels in Kansai

  • Conrad Osaka: Perched above Nakanoshima with floor-to-ceiling views over the river and city. A proper five-star base if you want Osaka's buzz without giving up comfort.
  • Nohga Hotel Kiyomizu Kyoto: A design-forward stay in Higashiyama with a rooftop bar and grilled local cuisine, an easy walk from Kiyomizu-dera's hillside paths.
  • Novotel Nara: A modern hotel with a rooftop terrace and bar, walking distance from Shin-Omiya Station and a short ride from Nara Park's deer and Todai-ji.
  • Kobe Portopia Hotel: A big, well-run hotel with views over Kobe and Osaka Bay, plus enough restaurants and bars on site that you don't need to go far for dinner.
  • Richmond Hotel Himeji: A straightforward, comfortable base close to Himeji Station, handy if you want to see the castle at opening time before the crowds arrive.

Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in Kansai

  • Pick one or two bases, not five: Osaka and Kyoto both make good hubs, and Nara, Kobe and Himeji are all doable as day trips by train. You'll spend less time packing and more time out exploring.
  • Book early for peak season: Cherry blossoms in late March and April, and autumn leaves through November, push prices up and rooms out across the whole region. Lock in your stay a few months ahead if your trip lands in either window.
  • Try a ryokan at least once: Even one night in Kyoto or Arashiyama, with tatami mats, a set dinner and maybe a private onsen, is worth the detour from a standard hotel room.
  • Match the area to what you're after: Namba for food and nightlife, Gion or Higashiyama for old Kyoto charm, Kobe's bayside for a quieter night with a view. Let your itinerary decide, not just the star rating.
  • Check the walk to the station: A cheap room five minutes from a JR line will usually serve you better than a slightly nicer one that eats fifteen minutes each way, especially if you're day-tripping to Nara or Himeji.
