Nice place although in need of update as everything is quite old and tired and the room was very dark. The area itself is remote and no hiking trails available apart from one on the other side of the river, along the river all the way to the cable car, but it is not used a lot so felt un-used for years with bear traps along the way and very overgrown, so we retreated after a while. Good bus connections to other places but you might need to consider hiring a car. The ryokan has private onsens which was excellent as I have several tattoos and was not allowed in other public places. Food at ryokan was very good and a highlight of the stay. The rating of this ryokan reflects it tired state and remoteness if you are prepared to travel from it and otherwise enjoy a relaxing stay.

We chose this ryokan because of its proximity to Kamikochi, but come to find, it's not a fast/easy trip. It's about half way between Matsumoto and Takayama - 1.5 hrs in each direction, so also not a fast trip. It's an old hotel (I think they plan on renovating soon), with nice, helpful staff, large room, small, hard beds, and incredible meals. I you want to experience a more rural setting in the alps, this is a good place to stop for a night. There's not much to do around the neighborhood.

This traditional Japanese Inn is in an area in the Alps that exists because of the hot springs - so go to enjoy the scenery, the indoor and outdoor bathing and, more than anything else, the attention you get from the staff. Greeted by green tea and encouragement to don your yukata, the purpose of any visit here needs to be to wind down (helpful after a Tokyo visit). Dining takes place in a private traditional Japanese room where one-to-one attention is provided. The food is a set menu but is truly beautiful in presentation, authentically Japanese and never ending! We gave up counting how many freshly prepared dishes appeared. Bedrooms are traditionally styled but it is ultimately a little hard to disguise that the overall structure is a slightly dated, purpose built hotel. Like most of Japan outwith the major cities, staff essentially speak only Japanese but have enough to explain the basics that you need to know. It made things better as opposed to problematic. So, go here to find out what the Japanese spend their weekends doing. We hade the entire place to ourselves on the Friday night but by Saturday it was full.
