Very good accommodation, very spacious room, complete with all equipment, electric hair curler, hair dryer, bathtub, soap, shampoo, washing machine, room zones are well divided.
This is a gateway from the world where you can relax in comfort. Hiking trails in the area are beautiful, and the walk near the Lake Ashi is nice. The restaurants in the neighborhood keep inconsistent hours but this may have been due to the holiday. You must travel to the other side of the lake to access markets and groceries, but transportation is convenient in the morning and afternoon not at night.
The property and the rooms are lovely. The location is pretty and very quiet. There is, unfortunately, almost nothing there. No stores and few restaurants (with bizarre limited hours of operation). During the middle of the day it is no problem as the pirate ship dock and the gondola are right there (and a gift shop, and a restaurant for breakfast and lunch- not open for supper sadly). Evenings are a nightmare if you don’t have food with you and you did not come by car. Heads up: the beds are comfortable but the futons in the loft are like sleeping on the floor… Fine for skinny people and kids. If you’re an adult and if you’re more plus-sizes, you will be in pain. Stick with the beds. We would ABSOLUTELY stay there again. We enjoyed our stay. We would stay more days next time and explore Gora (over the mountain via gondola and down the funicular) and some other areas. And we would come prepared with food! Travel Tip for swimmers: you are not allowed to swim in the lake. Apparently the Japanese think it is too cold. (They need to meet more Vikings and Canadians… We love a cold plunge!)
We only stayed one night at Hakone, but the place had everything we needed. It was clean and large enough for our family of 9. The area was beautiful and within walking distance of the Togendai Station. The only downside is that the restaurants around the area close early, but we were aware of this and ate before we got to the place.
