What Mitunguu is like

Mitunguu is a small agricultural town in Meru County's South Imenti area, on the Nkubu–Chogoria road at the foot of Mount Kenya's eastern slopes. It's a farming and trading centre – part of the miraa (khat), coffee and tea belt Meru County is known for – rather than a tourist stop, and hotel inventory directly in the town itself is very limited.

Where to actually stay

Most travellers passing through base themselves a short drive away in Nkubu, the nearest town with a real hotel selection:

Nkubu Heritage Hotel – a 3.5-star, 62-room property in Nkubu, around 15 minutes by car from the Meru Museum.

None of these sit inside Mitunguu itself, so budget 15–20 minutes' drive either way if you use the town as a base.

Why visit this area

Mitunguu isn't set up for leisure travel – there's no beach, safari lodge or landmark attraction in the immediate town. Its appeal is practical: it's a stopover for people travelling the Nkubu–Chogoria road toward Chogoria (a common access route to Mount Kenya's eastern side) or visiting Meru County on agricultural or family business. Meru National Park is a further drive away and isn't a quick side trip from here.
