What Utawala is like

Utawala is a fast-growing residential suburb on Nairobi's eastern edge, about 18km from the CBD, between Embakasi, Mihango and Ruai. Its name means "administration" in Swahili, a nod to its history as a military zone near the Embakasi Garrison. Today it's mostly known for affordable housing and its closeness to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) – a practical base rather than a leisure destination.

The main draw is JKIA: several properties sit within a few minutes of the airport, making Utawala a sensible overnight base for an early flight, a late arrival, or a long layover, without paying central-Nairobi prices.
