Hotels in Bhaktapur, Nepal
Bhaktapur is one of the Kathmandu Valley's three former royal cities and a genuine headline destination — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, about 12-14km east of Kathmandu. Its red-brick Durbar Square, Newari architecture and slower pace make it one of the most rewarding stops in the whole valley.
What Bhaktapur is known for
Bhaktapur Durbar Square, with the 55-Window Palace and the ornate Golden Gate; Nyatapola Temple, Nepal's tallest pagoda; Pottery Square, where potters still work by hand; and juju dhau, Bhaktapur's famous "king curd" — a genuinely local specialty worth seeking out. It's also considerably quieter and less traffic-heavy than central Kathmandu.

Getting there and around
Bhaktapur is around 30-45 minutes by taxi from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, or a similar drive/bus ride from central Kathmandu. Once you're there, the old city is compact and best explored on foot — cars can't reach most of the historic core anyway.
