Our experience was amazing! This was an experience that I have always dreamed about. The guides for the excursions were the best. They were so knowledgeable and friendly. I will never forget all the beautiful sounds that you wake up to in the rainforest. The lodge was very eco friendly and the rooms were very clean. The rooms only have three walls so it is normal to find an insect here and there. I will definitely be returning.

Amazing stay, Refugio Amazonas is a beautiful lodge - you're guaranteed to have a wonderful time! The rooms are spacious and well presented, comfortable and airy as they are open to the rainforest. The lodge is very well run from collection at the airport to the time you leave - the manager Carlos has it running like clockwork. The guides are absolutely fantastic too, and each group will have someone dedicated to them for the duration of their stay - my wife and I had Boris who was brilliant and he made our stay an unforgettable experience.

Refugio Amazonas is well organized by Rainforest Expedition, all transportation, meals and activities arranged thoughtfully, all staff and guides are friendly and attentive. It's beautifully designed and integrated with its rainforest surrounding. You get the full rainforest experience, falling asleep to the the sound of rain at night, being woken up by birds' singing in the morning, being taken to explore the jungle or river, and being pampered with healthy meals in the between. The food is good, well presented in buffet style, not a big selection as it's deep in the Amazon, but very fresh and tasty, always ended with excellent desert; a different menu is served everyday, and the menu and recipes are on display for anyone who is interested in. We were very "lucky" to get the true RAINforest experience as it had been raining heavily during our entire 3 day stay, which is not unexpected. Somehow starting from the 2nd day the temperature dropped to as low as 15C(according to our guide it's caused by the cold current from Patagonia during the transition from raining season to dry season), which caught us completely off guard. Being wet and cold, we put on all our clothings, still felt freezing, the staff quickly came to rescue giving everyone hot water bags and extra blankets to keep warm. Our guide arranged our group to go see macaw clay lick in Chuncho on the 3rd day. We left at 5am in heavy rain, took 4 hour round trip boat ride with the gusty wind, waited for more than 1 h

We stayed in much better remote jungle lodge in Iquitos for the same price. Food bland and not enough, cafeteria style with 2 options, ran out every night because staff + scientists eat it too -- 5 minutes after guests get theirs -- DONT BE LATE and get everything at once!! ran out nightly. Rooms have no privacy, 10 rooms under one roof with dividing walls that don't reach ceiling. You hear your neighbors whispering and every drop in the toilet -- not exactly the sounds of nature we were expecting. No ceiling fans in common areas, so food has flies and bees all over it during the mornings and day. Boardwalks slippery when wet, easy to split your head open when walking barefoot -- they don't allow boots in the common areas or boardwalks, I suppose too lazy to clean. Long walk (10-20 minutes) with A LOT of steps when you arrive by boat through the jungle, which is OK, except no one helped us with bags upon arrival or greeted us, we had to walk all the way to the lodge. Staff's kid taking up space in the common areas every single day and night, watching videos -- unprofessional. Bottled toiletries not eco-friendly. Toilets had bullet ants crawling all over at night. These guys have a very painful sting, made going to the bathroom at night an adventure. We didn't feel the place was catering to guests as much as it was catering to the staff and researchers. Would not recommend to friends and family, and would not spend more than $200 for the experience.

The Refugio Amazonas is truly unforgettable. The experience of living in the jungle, and being in the presence of natural beauty, and learning so much about the rainforest environment from the knowledgeable guides is very unique and enriching. Be prepared for true wilderness - heat, rain, bugs, critters, mud - and enjoy it.

Very cool hotel and great experience. Only critique is that we only had the option of leaving on the 7am boat even though we didn't need to be back to Puerto Maldonado till 8pm. It would have been nice to have a few extra hours in the hotel that morning. They kept us so busy we didn't have anytime to enjoy the hotel. There were some pretty nice looking hammocks that got no use. Really fun adventure otherwise!

Our family of six had a fantastic visit to Refugio Amazonas. Set in the heart of the rain forest, the location is a great place for those wanting to get up close to nature. The lodge combines an authentic experience - rooms open directly to the jungle and you sleep under mosquito nets - with luxury. Our meals were a great introduction to Peruvian cuisine from throughout the country. The staff could not have been better. From the meal service, to the bar, the hotel staff were exception. However, the highlight was our guide Cesar. Courteous, professional, and passionate, he couldn't have been a better ambassador for the hotel and the beautiful country of Peru. His ability to find birds and animals in the rain forest (not always an easy task) was truly amazing. We cannot recommend the Refugio highly enough, and we look forward to our next visit (where we will hopefully again have monkeys directly outside the lodge eating nuts!).

My girlfriend and I are in our mid 30s from nyc and stayed at Refugio for 3 nights in November 2014. Pros: 1. Considering the alternatives, if you go to the Amazon I don't think you'll find a better place in terms of infrastructure. 2. Very organized. Our flight was late getting and they had to arrange special transfer just for us. 3. Great guide and cool family style dinners Cons: 1. Can get very hot and humid in the summers with no fan relief and obviously no A/C 2. Know what you're getting into. There will be bugs everywhere in your room. It's the jungle after all.

Very poor & immature management that will laugh at your issues.Yes, this is in the jungle and yes you can expect mosquitoes - however, what you shouldn't have to expect or accept is bed bug bites and the real possibility that you will take some away with you. The manager suggested that the slow-moving rat I found in the bathroom was our fault as we might have had food in the room (we did not), and when I told him there was no food, he then said it must be the neighbor in next room. Funny though that the hotel puts RAT BAIT in the bathroom behind the shower stall (where most guests won't see it). They ration food - almost every meal they ran out of food! Bottom line - this place was very expensive and very very awful. Huge mistake to stay here.
