Look for a guesthouse with bicycle hire included, since cycling the old town is an easy, safe way to keep children entertained.

The cool season from November to February is the best time to visit Phrae, with mild days and comfortable evenings for walking around the teak-house old town. The hot season from March to May can get uncomfortably warm for sightseeing on foot, especially around midday. The rainy season from June to October brings lush green scenery but also sudden downpours, so pack accordingly if you're travelling then.

There are no direct flights from Australia to Phrae, and Phrae's own airport currently has no scheduled commercial flights. The easiest route is to fly from Australia to Bangkok or Chiang Mai, usually with one stop, then continue overland: an overnight train or bus from Bangkok takes around 8 to 10 hours to Den Chai, Phrae's nearest railway station, followed by a short taxi or tuk-tuk into town. Flying to Chiang Mai first and taking a bus, around 2 to 3 hours, is generally the quicker option.

Beyond the old town, it's worth heading to Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park, about 8 kilometres from town, where centuries of erosion have carved the sandstone into striking mushroom-shaped rock pillars. Ban Thung Hong, a few kilometres north, is the heart of Phrae's indigo-dyeing craft and a good spot to watch the process and pick up textiles. Rounding out a visit, Phrae's morning markets and local coffee shops are a relaxed way to soak up daily life away from the main tourist sights.

Phrae isn't a nightlife destination, so keep expectations modest if that's a priority. The main after-dark option is a Sunday evening walking street market near the old town, along with a handful of casual local bars and restaurants that stay open into the evening. Travellers wanting livelier nightlife are better off pairing a Phrae stopover with a few nights in Chiang Mai.

Outside your room rate, a comfortable daily budget in Phrae is roughly AU$25 to AU$40 per person. That covers three meals at local restaurants and markets, from around AU$2 to AU$5 a dish, plus bicycle or scooter hire for the day and small entrance donations at temples and museums. Long-distance transport to and from Phrae, such as the train or bus from Bangkok, is the main cost to budget separately.

Phrae's old town holds some of Thailand's best-preserved teak architecture, built during the province's teak-logging boom in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Wongburi House, completed between 1897 and 1907 for a local teak-trading family, blends solid teak carpentry with a European 'gingerbread' style of carved decoration, and its restoration earned a national conservation award in 1993. Wandering the surrounding lanes, you'll spot dozens of smaller teak homes still lived in today, giving the old town a lived-in feel rather than a museum-like one.

Phrae is the home of mo hom, a distinctive indigo-blue dye and the collarless cotton shirts made from it, traditionally worn by local farmers and still a point of pride in the province. Ban Thung Hong village, just north of town, is where most of the dyeing and weaving happens, and visitors can watch the multi-day dyeing process and buy shirts, scarves and bags directly from local makers. It's a genuinely Phrae-specific souvenir, different from the silk and cotton crafts sold elsewhere in northern Thailand.

Phrae is best treated as an overnight stop of one to two nights rather than a rushed day trip, since the old town, Phae Mueang Phi and the indigo village are spread out enough to need some travel time between them. One night lets you cover the teak-house old town and a nearby sight at an easy pace, while two nights gives room to add the indigo village or golden pagoda without rushing. Given the travel time needed to reach Phrae, most visitors pair it with a longer loop through northern Thailand rather than visiting on its own.
