Think that it is the best in the Sai Kaew beach area and there is a parking lot, there is a boat for the staff walking to greet us almost everyone. There is live music playing well.

Vongdeuan Resort offers you the perfect stay experience at Koh Samet. It was our second stay at Vongdeuan, and what made it even more special was the courtesy of its staff. I misplaced my wallet in Rayong and the hotel staff coordinated to not only trace the wallet but also get it onto the island "untouched". It was a moment of absolute delight for me. :) The room was clean, all amenities provided as promised, breakfast was good, and overall the ferry service to/fro Rayong was timely and great being free! Overall, another great stay at Koh Samet and cheers to Vongdeuan for making our stay memorable again. The beach in front of the Resort is one of the best on the island, which makes the stay at Vongdeuan even more special.

More about hotels in Rayong

About Rayong accommodation

Rayong is the beach escape a lot of Bangkok locals keep close to home. Koh Samet's white sand and clear water sit just a short speedboat ride from the mainland pier at Ban Phe, and back on the mainland the province grows some of Thailand's best durian and rambutan, served up fresh at roadside orchards and seafood shacks along the coast.

From an island bungalow a few steps off the sand to a serviced apartment back in Rayong town, there's a stay here to match however you want to do this trip.

Where to stay in Rayong

  • Koh Samet: The island everyone comes for. Beaches like Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Prao have the clearest water and whitest sand in the province, and stays range from simple beach bungalows to full spa resorts.
  • Rayong town: The mainland base, close to Central Rayong Shopping Mall, the Ko Kloi floating market and the Ban Phe pier for boats out to the island. Good pick if you want aircon comfort, real restaurants and an easy drive to the fruit orchards.

How much is Rayong accommodation?

  • Budget: AU$40-70, a clean aircon room in Rayong town or a simple bungalow set back from the beachfront.
  • Mid-range: AU$90-160, a pool, breakfast included and often a kitchenette if you book a serviced apartment.
  • Luxury: AU$220-400+, a beachfront resort on Koh Samet with a private stretch of sand, a spa and multiple pools.

What Rayong is known for

  • Koh Samet island: An easy, relaxed island getaway without the long-haul travel. Most visitors are on the island within half a day of leaving Bangkok, making it the go-to short break for people living in the capital.
  • Durian and rambutan orchards: Rayong is one of eastern Thailand's biggest fruit-growing provinces. Orchards like Suphattraland open for tastings from around May to August, serving durian alongside rambutan, mangosteen and longkong, and the province runs its own Rayong Fruit Festival each year in late May or early June to mark the harvest.
  • Fresh seafood: The coastline runs on fishing towns like Ban Phe, and restaurants such as Laem Cha Reon Seafood at the harbour mouth serve the day's catch, often grilled whole or stir-fried with Thai herbs.

Top-rated hotels in Rayong

  • Hilton Garden Inn Rayong: Connected to Central Rayong Shopping Mall, with a rooftop bar, an outdoor pool and Saeng Chan Beach under a 15-minute drive away.
  • Kameo Grand Hotel & Serviced Apartment Rayong: Studio and one-bedroom suites with kitchenettes, plus a sauna, steam room and year-round outdoor pool.
  • Tamarind Garden Hotel: A garden setting in Rayong town with a kids' pool, gym and Thai restaurant, solid value for families.
  • Ao Prao Resort: Bungalow-style rooms on Koh Samet's quieter west coast beach, with a spa, a pool and watersports on the sand out front.
  • Sai Kaew Beach Resort: Set across two Koh Samet beaches with three pools including a swim-up bar, plus beachside Thai massage and its own boat transfers from the mainland.

Travel tips for Rayong

  • Get to Koh Samet by bus or minivan from Bangkok to the Ban Phe pier, then a speedboat across. The full trip usually runs around four hours door to door.
  • October to April is the driest, sunniest stretch, and Koh Samet's own microclimate means it stays drier than most of Thailand even during the wet season.
  • Time a visit for late May or early June if the orchards are the drawcard, when durian and rambutan are at their best and the Rayong Fruit Festival is on.
  • Rent a car or scooter if the fruit orchards are on your list. Ban Phe pier is well served by taxi and minivan, but the orchards sit inland and are easier to reach with your own wheels.
  • Book Koh Samet stays ahead on weekends. Bangkok locals treat the island as their default short break, and rooms fill up fast from Friday to Sunday.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Rayong

Do Australian passport holders need a visa to visit Rayong?

Australians can enter Thailand visa-free for short tourism stays. Exemption rules have recently been shortened from 60 days to 30 days, with an optional one-time 30-day extension available at Thai immigration for about 1,900 THB. You'll also need to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before you land, as it's mandatory for every entry regardless of nationality.

Which area of Rayong is best for families with young kids?

Ao Prao on Koh Samet's western side has calmer, shallower water than the busier main beaches, making it a safer swim for younger children. If you'd rather skip the boat crossing altogether, Rayong town gives you a shopping mall, familiar dining options and an easy drive to the fruit orchards, all without needing to island-hop.

When is the best time of year to visit Rayong?

December to February is the most comfortable stretch, cooler and less humid than the rest of the year. If you don't mind the odd afternoon shower, the green season from around July to September brings quieter beaches and lower room rates on Koh Samet, since it falls outside school holiday periods in both Thailand and Australia.

How do you get to Rayong from Australia?

There's no direct flight from Australia into Rayong. The simplest route is a direct flight to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, then a taxi or transfer of roughly two and a half to three hours down the coast to Rayong or the Ban Phe pier. Some carriers also run seasonal flights from Perth into U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya Airport, which can work well if you're heading straight for the Eastern Seaboard rather than into Bangkok first.

What are the top luxury hotel options in Rayong?

Hotel Paradee sits on a private stretch of Koh Samet's southern coast, with pool villas and several dining options for a higher-end stay. Le Vimarn Cottages & Spa offers a quieter, more boutique beachfront setting nearby. Both sit apart from the island's busier backpacker beaches, so expect a calmer, more polished experience than the standard bungalow scene.

What can you do in Rayong besides the beach?

Khao Chamao National Park has an eight-tier waterfall with clear swimming pools and jungle walking trails, about an hour's drive from Rayong town. Closer to the coast, Sopha Botanical Garden offers a relaxed kayak paddle through mangrove forest, and Rayong Aquarium is a good low-key option with younger kids on a day away from the sand.

Where's the best area for nightlife in Rayong?

Hat Sai Kaew and neighbouring Ao Phai on Koh Samet are where the evening scene happens, with beachfront bars, fire shows and live music running into the night. It's a relaxed, beach-bar style of nightlife rather than a club scene, and most places wind down by midnight, so it suits a low-key night out over a big one.

How much should you budget for a Rayong trip beyond accommodation?

Budget roughly AU$10-20 a day for meals at seafood shacks and local restaurants, or AU$40-60 if you're eating at resort restaurants. The return speedboat crossing to Koh Samet runs around AU$15-20, plus a national park entry fee of about AU$14 for foreign visitors, which stays valid for five days. A scooter for the day typically runs AU$14-19 if you want to explore under your own steam.

Should you choose Rayong or Pattaya for a short trip from Australia?

Pattaya has the bigger nightlife scene, more shopping and a busier stretch of mainland beach. Rayong is the quieter option, built around Koh Samet's clearer water and a more relaxed pace. Pick Pattaya for lively bars and entertainment on tap, or Rayong if a relaxed island beach with fresh seafood is more your priority.

Is Koh Samet good for snorkelling?

Koh Samet isn't set up as a serious dive destination, but half-day and full-day snorkelling trips run out to nearby islands like Koh Thalu and Koh Kudi, where the water is clearer than around the main beaches. Boats typically stop at several islands with lunch included, and gear like masks, fins and life jackets is provided, so you don't need to bring your own.

What are the best areas to visit near Rayong?

You can visit and enjoy your staycation in these popular regions such as Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Nan, Ayutthaya, Phitsanulok.
