I was visiting a friend volunteering for the Peace Corps just down the road so my location was critical. Was pleasantly surprised upon arriving at the White Sands resort. My room was well apportioned and very clean. It looked out through palms to a beautiful white sand beach and ocean. They even strung a hammock just outside my door which made for excellent down time. The road in is in pretty bad shape but they are looking to repair it. It adds to the rustic flavor! This is a very small and quiet resort There was no loud music or flurry of activity. It was wonderfully relaxed. The soon to be new owners have lots of fantastic plans to upgrade the property so I will be sure and return to check those out. I did visit the resorts further north and found them to be loud and rather cheesy. Bottom line is for the cost this is a wonderful place to stay in western Tonga.

The photos are exactly what you expect. Its a small resort with an amazing private beach. The owner was accommodating and it was so relaxing. You do need to bring your own food and drinks but there is a kitchen area to use. I loved it as its more laid back and back to basics then a full on resort and more private. I would definitely come back here again!

What a beautiful setting. I had the best view of Tonga Tapu from my deck, right by the water. The owners and staff are very polite, friendly and accommodating. I have stayed at a few different resorts, bed n breakfasts, lodges and backpackers since being in Tonga and I found White Sands to be the best and just what I needed. Booked in for a week and will be staying another week. Thank you Gloria, Marissa, Bessie and Richard for making my stay a very pleasurable experience indeed. Sunday Umu was great and tge sunsets from my deck...Exceptional. Arohanui Charmaine

This resort is more of an experience than a resort, and not the type that most travellers are expecting or desire. Imagine a 1990s car with rust, a broken radio, missing hubcaps, temperamental headlights, and an aweful noise for each action. That car is in the same family as this resort. Our room was first quite dirty with cob webs and bugs, with no working bathroom light (lamp on the floor as a replacement). We shared the room with ghekos, mice, and a colony of ants. The running water smelled foul, sometimes didn't exist, and the hot water heaters weren't always functional. We also initially didn't have bathroom towels provided (received them on the third night). There was a lot of false advertising, including no pool or conditioning, and the amenities on site are not what you'd expect from a resort located a long ways from a shop. We stayed 11 months after the cyclone reaked havoc on their property, but not much was restored. The place is quite worn down, the owners are friendly, but I was disappointed in the lost potential of the property. With some effort the beach could be free from pollution, the tables and chairs on the beach could be set upright and level, the guest rooms could be fixed up so they all close and the holes in the screen are patched up. There could be a little shop on site with water, non-perishable Digicel tu

It is a in a beautiful location but we had many issues with our stay. We booked and paid up front in January and cyclone Gita went through causing a lot of destruction in February (we stayed middle to end of July). We understand it takes a long time to get back up and running but tried to contact them the week prior to check that all was ok (we have a 17 month old daughter). We tried the phone number, email and website (all not working), facebook page and went through expedia with no response. When we arrived they were aware that we had been trying to contact them but had made no effort to respond. We were put in a room that had no hot water despite them knowing it didn't. We were given access to another room (not private use) for showering when needed. There were no resort type facilities available so it really is just a motel unit on the beach, quite a distance to other places for food etc and it would have been handy to have a 4WD vehicle on the driveway. There was a fridge, toaster and jug in the room. They gave us access to the kitchen which was also being used by their family. The pool was not running that we were aware of. We paid for a continental breakfast which was not provided. We were offered an extra night for free but had already booked were unable to stay, and once we got to our next place, were glad we didn't. We were disappointed with our experience of this place but felt a little effort from the owners would have made a huge difference.

The rooms are extremely run down. Minimal maintenance has been done at the property. Given a room with broken bed frames with dirty sheets on unmade beds. Black mould through the mattresses and bed frames on the uncomfortable beds. Ceiling is falling down and held up only by tape. The rooms lacked furniture. Staff were unhelpful and had a carefree attitude about the situation. DO NOT BOOK WITH A NO REFUND POLICY.

We stayed there for 2 nights at the start of July. We really enjoyed staying on the white sand beach, such a beautiful place but disappointing... it was advertised on their official website and Expedia that the resort had a pool. This is one of the main reasons why we booked there, packed our togs and everything to only show up and get told that the pool is broken due to the cyclone that happened in feb. that’s understandable but why not update the website so everyone knows that there is no more pool. Apart from that the staff were very nice and welcoming.

The staff is very nice and helpful and their English is pretty good. Sadly there are many bugs around because the door is not completely covering the gap of the door. Sadly no air conditioning, but a fan is available. Awesome beach around and a nice little pool which is not the cleanest... Overall a good hotel if you have no problem with bugs.

Our stay at the resort was the best time EVER. There is truly nothing else to do but RELAX! White sand and beach, beautiful area to do some shallow water snorkeling (but there is deeper as well). I am just a bit scared of the deep waters :) I spent wonderful hours just lazing under the palms and doing some watercolour painting. Gloria and her team are the best. They will help you however they can. Best place for a honeymoon! (not that it was mine, unfortunately hehe)

The room is large and roomy and clean and comfortable but dated.no tv.but does have wifi You will need a car as the resort is in a remote area. No public transport There is no restutant in the resort so unless you order food in advance from staff you will have to drive to another resort or restutant. Breakfast is included. Everything shuts down on sunday so you will need to be organized and prepare for the day . The staff are freindly and the host Gloria is very welcoming. She lives in the resort so is always available. The beach is beautiful and has a very tropical vibe nice and quiet just what we wanted there are lots of places to sit and chill. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Right on the nicest beach i saw on the island, the location is beautiful. It's quite far from town, about $75-80 TOP ($55-60 NZD). Make sure you get the hotel to confirm they understand you want a transfer - don't take it for granted that requesting it and confirming pricing means it'll show up. The beds are incredibly firm and bathroom a bit dated; but on the whole I'd go back there as the beach was amazing. Where else can you sit on a gorgeous white beach for hours and not see another person?! Heaven. The sunsets were incredible, one night i even saw whales at sunset. Beautiful. Simple accommodation on a simply gorgeous little private beach.

Was what we expected with comfortable, basic rooms. The beach area was the best bit with good places to sit and watch the Whales pass by in the distance. A pity that the pool was dirty and green during our stay as my kids would have loved to use it. Making the pool clean and useable needs to be a priority. The staff are all friendly and helpful and we had a pleasant stay.

Serenity on the west coast of Tonga for gorgeous sunsets. However there is nothing in close proximity so bring some drinks and food. During my stay there was no restaurant or bar available. Staff are great and happy to go the extra mile.

Definitely need transport as is isolated but lovely surrounds and much better than some other local accommodation. Not really a resort. No drinks, bar, restaurant or cafe. Meals cooked on site are very basic. No daily housekeeping. Pictures make the rooms look bigger and better furnished than the reality. Friendly staff and owner though.

I have very mixed feelings about our stay here. The staff was very kind and helpful, the rooms were clean when we checked in, they were willing to make us lunch and dinner on the days we needed it, resort is close to the beach and the outdoor seating areas were wonderful! Check in was very confusing, and also their paperwork and their practices didn't line up (ex: paper in room said no food would be served on Sunday, but someone came to our room with breakfast. Nice surprise, but confusing). Our biggest problem was that there was significant water damage to the room. When we crawled into bed late the first night, there was mildew on the bedding. Mold on the ceiling, and obvious water damage to the door. We stayed for 5 nights, and one night we had a huge storm. We woke up to soaked bedding and pools of water on the floor. We noticed staff in other rooms cleaning up water, but no one came to clean our room. We never had a replacement of towels or bedding at all actually. We only paid around $50USD per night, so I don't feel like I have too much room to complain though. You get what you pay for. I just wish someone would have brought us dry bedding. We loved the outdoor spaces of this resort, and would totally go back again to spend days there relaxing, but I can't recommend the rooms because of the mildew/mold/water damage.

You do not go to Tonga and expect 5* luxury resort with pleated curtains and white fluffy duvet/pillows but what you will get is the ever friendly Tongan hospitality and natural beauty of an unspoilt island and a taste of the true South Pacific. Highlight of the trip was snorkelling with humpback whales...must pre-book and highly recommended, then top it off with sipping from a coconut on the beach and wqtch the glorious sunsets.
