More about hotels in Kocaeli
Kocaeli curls around the eastern tip of İzmit Bay, an easy run east of Istanbul and directly on the road and rail line through to Ankara, which makes it one of the few places in Turkey where a stopover night actually saves you a day rather than adding one. The province runs as Turkey's industrial heartland, with container ships and refinery lights along the Körfez and Derince waterfront, but the bay itself still turns properly pretty at sunset, and there's more green space here than the "industrial capital" label suggests.
Most visitors split their stay between İzmit's own waterfront and the pine-forested hills up around Kartepe, and that split works in your favour. You get a proper bay view and city convenience on one end, and a cooler, quieter mountain base on the other, with everything from simple guesthouses to a genuine 5-star on the water in between.
Where to stay in Kocaeli
- İzmit (city centre) - the province's capital and the obvious base for business or a straight-through stop: waterfront promenade, the old clock tower downtown, and the best transport links by far. See hotels in İzmit.
- Başiskele - a beach-facing strip along the bay, and genuinely the pick for a first visit: sea-view rooms, a real coastline, still only about 20 minutes from central İzmit. See hotels in Başiskele.
- Kartepe & Maşukiye - pine forest, waterfalls, and a working ski season from December through March; the forest village of Maşukiye is dotted with trout restaurants built right over the stream. See hotels in Kartepe.
- Gölcük - a smaller town further round the bay, quiet and mostly local, worth it if you want distance from the industrial stretch without leaving the coast. See hotels in Gölcük.
- Gebze & Darıca - the western edge of the province, closest to Istanbul's Asian side, and stacked with international chain hotels built for the industrial parks nearby rather than tourists, which makes for a solid, no-fuss overnight if you're driving through. See hotels in Darıca.
How much is Kocaeli accommodation?
Kocaeli is one of the cheaper corners of the Marmara region to sleep in. Rooms across the province start from around AU$47 a night, and even the best 5-star on the water comes in well under what the same rating would cost you in central Istanbul.
- Backpackers/Hostels: From AU$47 per night. Simple, no-frills rooms in İzmit's older streets, fine for a single night on the way through.
- Budget hotels/Guesthouses: From AU$75 per night. Small family-run hotels, usually with breakfast included and a 24-hour desk.
- Mid-range/Apartments: From AU$112 per night. Modern chain hotels with a pool and gym, the sweet spot for a business trip or a few nights based in İzmit or Gebze.
- Boutique: From AU$135 per night. Forest lodges and smaller design-led stays around Maşukiye, priced up a notch through ski season.
- Luxury/Resorts: From AU$145 per night. The genuine 5-star tier, mostly on the bay at Başiskele, with a spa and a proper restaurant thrown in.

Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in Kocaeli
- Book Kartepe and Maşukiye well ahead for the December-to-March ski season. Snow-season weekends sell out fast and prices climb with them.
- If you're arriving by train, İzmit station sits on the Halkalı-Ankara line, so a hotel within walking distance of the centre saves you a taxi at the other end.
- Staying in Gebze or Darıca cuts your drive time to Istanbul's Asian side to well under an hour, handy if you're flying out of Sabiha Gökçen the next morning.
- Filter for a sea-facing room specifically if you book in Başiskele. Not every listed room actually faces the bay, and the difference in the view is significant.
- Pack for both ends of the province separately. It can be a mild bay-side evening in İzmit and genuinely cold up in Kartepe on the same day.
Once you've settled on a base, Seka Park is worth the trip on its own: a roughly 580-acre stretch of coastline where an old paper factory has been rebuilt into a science centre and a paper museum, a rare case of Kocaeli's industrial past turning into one of its best afternoons out.
