This hotel was in a beautiful location with stunning grounds (which needed a bit of maintenance). the bar, reception, restaurant & seating areas within the main hotel were beautifully updated but I stayed in a room out the back in a separate wing and my patio door was broken and could not be locked so i had about 1/2 hours sleep - worrying about someone coming into my room. This whole block needs serious renovation. All in all though the room - even though it needed a complete update, the bed was comfortable and the linen on the bedding was lovely. Lovely meal in the restaurant & the breakfast was delicious

The ‘mandatory’ online check in and codes for bedroom doors were a bit of a faff but the hotel has been significantly upgraded and the decor is very tasteful.

I feel this hotel has just changed management. For the price we were charged it was very tired, carpet stains in corridors, buckets to catch leakes. The room was spacious but needed a deep clean. We were charged £10 for the car park. We had an evening meal that was presented and cooked well. My portion was very small. Breakfast was average. Staff were very kind and welcoming.

Parking charges are misleading. “Additional charges for parking may be applicable” is very different from not having their own carpark & having to use the public carpark opposite the hotel with charges starting from £10 for overnight & getting ridiculous when you stay longer. Payment is taken by hotel in reception. The room I stayed in faced the road. Large clean room with the strongest water pressure I’ve come across in the UK. But the traffic noise from the road was off the scale. No double glazing, busy road, very close to the roundabout and next to a bikers pub. It was too noisy to follow a phone conversation or watch tv, never mind sleeping. The staff were lovely.

As a single woman travelling alone, I rarely feel unsafe in a hotel, but unfortunately at this hotel I did and I never leave negative reviews. Upon arriving the reception area had a few Eastern European men ‘mooching’ about, there was nobody on reception to greet me, but knowing this is a check in remotely hotel that was fine, had it not been for the men hanging around the area. My room although clean had a horrible smell and the balcony door was unlocked. I had a terrible nights sleep, not just because the bed is so hard, but I woke at every noise thinking someone was entering the room. At 4:45am there was a few knocks on my door - I don’t know if this was a room mistake, but just added to my concern. There wasn’t any mention of having to pay for parking onsite, so was annoyed at having to pay £10 to park overnight- especially when in the morning I could see I could have parked outside the hotel for free. I have since read that this hotel is/was housing asylum seekers, so if you’re a lone woman travelling alone; I would avoid - equally if you don’t want to sleep on a rock hard bed avoid.

This is a lovely and peaceful hotel - the room was cleaned to a high standard, the food was really tasty, with a good menu and well presented food. I especially enjoyed the sea bass and there was a huge selection for breakfast. The staff are very polite and obliging - nothing is too much trouble. The grounds will look lovely in summer, but even in the winter they are still nice. I really recommend a stay here.

Rooms were not clean enough. They had cobwebs and dirty glasses to drink from. The smell of smoking and toilet made it pretty unbearable to stay for the first night. We requested a clean up the next morning, and febreeze was sprayed and rest of left as it was for the next night. Very disappointed and although this is a convenient location, won’t be returning 😭

Room was large and bed very comfortable. Lots of corridors to navigate to the room...mind old and beautiful building. Shower was pretty poor though as took ages to get the water warm enough. Great place though for hiking around Box Hill.

Lovely clean and comfy bed. Repair to towel rail carried out immediately. Quiet setting despite the nearness of roads. Staff on the premises very good. Bar staff and breakfast staff excellent. Booking was diabolical. AI was rubbish.

I stayed in a privilege room, there were birds singing loudly at 3am, for atleast an hour, went to find someone to help me, no one at reception over night, had to use a whatsapp code, managed to move rooms to a smaller room at 5am, with no assistance with luggage, to find ladybugs on the bed and lamp, int he morning I asked for compensation for the terrible night sleep, unclean room and poor service, the gentleman on the front desk said it was a management decision but still a week later I have hard nothing despite sending multiple follow ups and demanding a response. It was a terrible experience that could have been handled much different and I held off writing this review to give them the benefit of the doubt and opportunity to correct it but the lack of response is just astonishing. I travel all over the world on a regular basis (every month) and I have never left a poor review on this website.
