The location can’t be beat, just across the street from the cathedral in Old San Juan. The hotel was a Carmelite convent for hundreds of years prior to being converted into an elegant hotel.
The calico hotel cat was everywhere and always ready to be petted.
The bell staff and front desk folks were wonderful and provided great tips for dining and sightseeing. Our room was spotless and well appointed, and the bathroom was especially nice. Mattress was on the lumpy side, but we slept fine.
The only downfall to El Convento is the patio bar/restaurant in the lobby level. The food was pretty bad, especially for the price, and the service on the evening of our arrival was tragic. We only ate there because we arrived very late and were too tired to venture out. Big mistake. The restaurant did much better on all fronts with the included breakfasts.
