Solar do Castelo is a very special place. It’s like a little retreat atop the hectic and narrow streets of Alfama, right next to the Palace of Sao Jorge. Quiet and calm (except for the resident peacocks, which strangely we got used to), it’s a restful place that feels more like an inn. My only slight complaint was the bathroom was a bit cramped (compared to other 5-star hotels we stayed at in Sesimbra and Porto) but it was well appointed. The bed was very comfortable, and they even offer to make it softer for you if you want, by adding a topper. I took them up on that offer and it was amazing. The staff is genuinely nice and helpful. Although you have to huff and puff to get up here, it’s ultimately worth it.
One thing to note: everything I read said cars could not come all the way up to the hotel, but this proved not to be entirely true. Taxis have a special pass that allows them to get past the “pins” - traffic posts that come out of the ground and lower if you have the pass thingy. Ubers and cars can only come up so far.
