The guesthouse is quite nice, the dorm I stayed in is just 4 bunks, which is a good thing when staying is guesthouses. The showers were very clean for a shared situations. The location is in a charming district near Kyoto university. It can get a little loud at night with the university students drinking in the area, but that wasn’t really a problem if you have earplugs. The proprietor and her family have limited English ability, so be prepared for some mild miscommunications, but they are impeccably friendly and good-natured, so it was never a problem.

The Guesthouse Hyakumanben Cross was charming and kept very clean. The owners, a mother and daughter, were welcoming, friendly, and helpful. I was surprised at how convenient the location is! Nearby Demachi Yanagi train station is a sort of terminal station at the north east side of Kyoto city. It's a good starting point to go down into the city, or up north out of the city for mountain temple sightseeing. Hyakumanben itself is near Kyoto University, so there are so many different bus lines running through the area. I was able to get everywhere I wanted to by train or bus, either directly or with just a single transfer. The guesthouse had everything you need. I was in one of the shared rooms which had 2 sets of bunk beds and would sleep 4 individuals. Every cot had a curtain for a bit of privacy, and a locker to hold your things. I had hoped to meet other travelers during my stay. To my surprise there were mainly Japanese guests who mainly kept to themselves, and I never really saw anyone in the common space even though I sat there reading for a while. Maybe it was just timing, but for my trip it wasn't the international guesthouse experience I half expected. Still, it was a great stay and I would gladly visit this guesthouse again the next time I'm in Kyoto.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, they kindly allowed me to practice my bad Japanese but they also spoke some English, so it was easy to communicate. As I was leaving they gave me a little origami pig as a good luck charm - very sweet. I was in a mixed shared room which was very clean and comfortable. The facilities were great, with showers, a laundry room and a private bathtub which you could rent for an additional ¥300. The hostel is conveniently located near to many shrines and temples, and there is a bike rental shop about five minutes down the road (cycling is a very good way to go for exploring Kyoto as it’s very flat and quite compact). Highly recommend!

The owner is such a sweet and helpful lady, and makes it easy for you to explore Kyoto. Breakfast area converts to a quiet restaurant, so enjoy a dinner here and try the shochu.

Stayed for a week while attending a conference at Kyoto University, as it is strategically located at Hyakumanben Cross and 5 min walk away from Demachiyanagi Station (super convenient!) - many options for transportation around. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by beautiful smiles of the hosts. The place is super clean and well taken care off. There is a restaurant underneath and the food they serve is super delicious!! The people who runs the place treat their guests like family members, we felt very welcomed throughout our stay. We were clearly informed about the facilities around and modes of transportation to visit various places. Others guests were also very polite and considerate, as we managed to exchange daily pleasantries. We slept very well with minimal to negligible/nonexistent noise level. So many to describe but you have to come and stay here to experience is awesomeness of this place. Highly recommended to any travellers!

Comfortable bedding brought me good sleep at very cold snowing night. Public and room area is clean and tidy and free offer towel for taking bath. Location is convenient as bus stop is nearby. Staff is friendly especially the old lady. I will consider to stay again at this warm & convenient guesthouse next time I go to Kyoto.

Room was great size but somewhat spartan for amenities. We thought we were going to have a private bathroom external to the room but all bathrooms are shared. Not a problem for us but unexpected. Management were very helpful with transportation options.

Once you accept that there is an 11pm curfew and that the walls are not so thick, you will have a nice stay. I felt the overall condition of the hostel was excellent; the toilet was clean and modern; the shower was clean and had strong water pressure.

The hotel was very clean, staff were friendly and recommended some excellent restaurants. There is quite a lot to do in the area, with plenty of restaurants, ice cream, arcade, karaoke, clubs, etc. Our room had a terrific view of Mount Daimonji and was very comfortable, albeit not very spacious. However, one issue we had was with other guests being noisy after curfew. There is no phone in the room, so there isn't really any way to contact the staff to let them know about it. I ended up having to deal with it myself, and tell the person who was literally trying to have a business conference call outside of the door to my room to kindly GTFO.

I was looking for somewhere to stay close to Kyoto University for a business trip. The Guesthouse Hyakumanben Cross was perfect! It's small, comfy, very neat and clean, and just a short nice walk from the campus. The local streets have many small restaurants and coffee shops. It is also a convenient short walk to bus stops to the main train station, and the Keihan train line (Demachiyanagi stop).
