Sometimes photos of a hotel on a website only tell you so much. This is the case with the 1908 Hotel Lisboa.
What are its high points. Staff are friendly, helpful and full of good advice. The breakfast is excellent. Tick location as very good as it is only a short walk to Lisbon’s big squares tourist trap heart.
It’s in an area that is part of older 19th-20th century Lisbon which is in the early stages redevelopment. The hotel is part of that change.
One side of the hotel backs on to a main road into the city. The other onto a large triangle which we’ll call a square that has a number of good and relatively cheap restaurants on one side. Pricier and very good eateries are not too far away.
Low point: The rooms and bathrooms are small (think Paris three star in which you can’t swing a cat).
It has an eclectic clientele, or as my partner put it: “All ages. Everything from bohemian to chic pretending they are slumming it.”
My test for hotels anywhere is: What is the likelihood that we would stay there again?
I’d certainly give it shot. As my partner said: “In 10 years you won’t know this place.” That’s a good assessment.
