We recently stayed in a Riverside Trapper Tent and unfortunately our experience was disappointing.
My biggest concern was the heater. I wish the booking information clearly stated that the tent uses a kerosene heater. We were surprised by the extremely strong odor. We were camping with our 8-month-old baby and our autistic 5-year-old, who is very sensitive to smells.
The staff were friendly, responsive, and came to help us. They explained the smell should only occur during the initial combustion, but the odor remained very strong the entire time the heater was on. We were also advised that it was not safe for a baby this young, so we turned it off and opened all the tent windows to air it out. Without the heater, the temperature inside the tent dropped to about 6°C overnight, making for a very cold and uncomfortable night.
We've camped many times before at powered campsites using our own electric portable heater without any issues, so this experience was very different and made camping much more stressful for our family. We had been looking forward to this trip for weeks, so it was disappointing that our first experience at Sundance turned out this way.
I truly appreciate how kind and helpful your staff were throughout the situation. I hope you'll consider providing clearer information about the kerosene heaters before booking so families can make an informed decision, especially those traveling with infants or children who are sensitive to odors.
