Animal Spotlight: Sea Jellies

Sea jellies have entralled many with their mesmerising nature. Now is the chance to go behindthe-scenes as Singapore Oceanarium sheds light on its sea jelly husbandry and breeding efforts. In this guided tour of the Aquarist Lab, gain exclusive access to the sea jelly nursery and catch animal care specialists in action and their commitment to caring for sea jellies. That's not all, witness a feeding session and learn about how marine conservation can make an ocean of difference to the world we live in.

Ocean in Focus: Into the Abyss

Ever wondered what it takes to live in the darkest depths? Now is the chance to uncover the beauty, ingenuity and resilience hidden deep within the ocean. This in-depth guided tour offers a closer look into how these deep-dwelling animals have not just adapted and survived, but thrived in the harshest of conditions.

Apart from engaging with a dedicated guide for a select zone within Singapore Oceanarium, this tour offers private access to support areas where specialised care is provided to these elusive, yet marvellous animals. Leave this experience with not just a newfound appreciation for the deep, but exclusive deep-sea themed memorabilia.

Fossilist Workshop

Fossils are often seen on display, but how many have had the chance to unearth one?

Singapore Oceanarium offers a one-day masterclass on fossils at the Research and Learning Centre, providing participants with the opportunity to uncover invaluable clues about life during the planet’s formative years. Designed for both adults and families, the programme delves into fossils, their formation, and the significance of fossil discoveries.

Participants will have the chance to study these storied relics up close and engage in a hands-on excavation activity, where they can unearth and take home their very own fossil.

Best thing to do

The Singapore Oceanarium (reimagined from the former S.E.A. Aquarium) offers more than 20 distinct zones that blend maritime history, prehistoric evolution, and deep-sea exploration. To make the most of your visit, prioritize these standout experiences:

Ancient Waters

Step back millions of years to witness the evolution of marine life. This zone features impressive life-sized animatronics of prehistoric apex predators, including the armored Dunkleosteus and the Xiphactinus. It is a rare opportunity to see "living fossils"—species that have remained largely unchanged for eons—alongside interactive displays where you can physically touch ancient fossils.

Jellyfish Habitat

Experience one of the world's largest Kreisel habitats, a specialized cylindrical tank spanning nearly seven meters. It houses thousands of moon sea jellies that pulse in a synchronized "underwater ballet." The immersive, color-changing LED lighting makes this one of the most photogenic spots in the entire facility.

Whale Fall and The Abyss

Venture into the darkest parts of the ocean to learn about a "Whale Fall"—a fascinating deep-sea phenomenon where a fallen whale carcass creates a thriving, years-long ecosystem for deep-sea creatures. Using immersive projection mapping and specialized tanks, these zones reveal the strange, bioluminescent animals that survive in the crushing depths of the ocean trenches.

Photo hunting spots

The most dramatic shots are captured at the Ocean Dome, where the 180-degree curved glass makes it appear as though the sea is crashing over you—perfect for a "submerged" silhouette. For a more ethereal aesthetic, the Sea Jelly Gallery features glowing, color-changing tanks that serve as a neon-lit backdrop for "mood" photography. Finally, don't miss the Shark Seas tunnel, where you can snap a high-energy photo with a hammerhead shark soaring directly above your head.

Must-visit shopping

Commemorate your voyage at Tidal Trove, the flagship store where you can find exclusive artisan jewelry and eco-friendly apparel inspired by the deep. If you are fascinated by the strange and unusual, the Deep-Sea Boutique specializes in quirky merchandise, featuring bioluminescent plushies and prehistoric-themed collectibles that are rarely found in standard souvenir shops.

Best time to visit

Finding the optimal time to visit the Singapore Oceanarium requires balancing the local academic calendar against regional tourism trends to ensure a serene viewing experience.

May and October: These periods are ideal as they fall just before the major June and December holiday surges. With local schools in session, you will encounter fewer large groups, allowing for unobstructed views of the deeper galleries.
Mid-week advantage: To avoid the "weekend bridge" crowds, schedule your visit for Tuesday through Thursday. These days typically see the lowest footfall, offering a much more contemplative atmosphere in the Sea Jelly and Deep Sea zones.
Strategic mid-day entry: On weekends or peak days, the galleries often experience a brief lull between 12:30 and 14:00 when families depart for lunch. Utilizing this window allows you to navigate the high-traffic areas with greater ease.
Monsoon season sanctuary: Because the facility is entirely indoors and climate-controlled, it serves as an excellent "wet weather" alternative during the Northeast Monsoon (November to January). While outdoor attractions may close during storms, the Oceanarium remains fully operational and comfortable.

Practical tips

Download the Resorts World Sentosa app to keep an eye on live schedules. Feeding times at the Open Ocean habitat and the sea jelly exhibits are the highlights of the day, and you’ll want to plan your route so you don't miss them.
The Oceanarium is heavily air-conditioned to keep the marine life comfortable, which can feel quite chilly after the Singapore heat. Bring a light cardigan or pashmina so you can stay comfortable while lingering at the larger viewing panels.
To beat the heaviest crowds, aim to visit right at opening (10:00) or later in the afternoon after 15:00. If you arrive early, head straight to the Open Ocean habitat first; you’ll get to enjoy the "majestic view" in peace before the school groups and tour buses reach the center.
Singapore Oceanarium is predominantly cashless. Ensure your mobile wallet (Apple Pay/Google Pay) or contactless credit cards are ready for grab-and-go snacks at Tide Deli or souvenirs at Tidal Trove.
While photography is encouraged, please turn off your flash before entering. Flash can be harmful and stressful to the marine animals, and you’ll actually get much clearer photos through the glass without the glare from a flashbulb.
