Sukamade Beach is located in the Meru Betiri National Park (TN) area, which is on the border between Banyuwangi and Jember Regencies. This area is known as one of the oldest turtle conservation sites in Indonesia.
The turtle conservation program in Sukamade began during the Dutch colonial era, around 1927. Until now, Sukamade Beach is still a center for turtle conservation activities that are continuously preserved by the Meru Betiri National Park Center.
Four types of turtles out of the seven species in the world can be found on this beach, including the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), and leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). This fact makes Sukamade Beach an important destination on the map of rare animal conservation in Indonesia.
