Mount Bromo is one of the most-visited mountains in Indonesia, thanks to its otherworldly terrain and relatively smooth hike. Its sunrise panorama with Mount Semeru in the background, best seen from Mount Penanjakan, is undoubtedly one of Java's most iconic sights. A sea of volcanic sand named Segara Wedi, or Pasir Berbisik ("whispering sands") surrounds the mountain. On the plains lies a Hindu temple where local Tenggerese people hold the Yadnya Kasada festival every year.
