Dating from 962, Tirta Empul is a temple complex built around a sacred natural spring in Tampaksiring. Sarong-clad tourists and Hindunese worshippers from across the island flock to the temple's bathing pools to purify themselves and collect holy water for religious rituals at home. Nestled upon a hill overlooking the temple is the Tampaksiring Palace, which was built in the 1950s for President Soekarno.
