Glastonbury has become the most famous music festival in the world since it regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of music lovers from all over the world for a three-day extravaganza. This wasn’t always the case, though. In honor of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the seminal event, we’ve decided to revisit the celebration's origins.

History of Glastonbury Festival

The initial Glastonbury Festival, or Pilton Pop, Folk & Blues Festival, was held at Worthy Farm in 1970 by festival organizer Michael Eavis, who was inspired to hold the festival after attending an outdoor music festival.

Festival tickets today cost over £250 for the weekend, a far cry from the original’s $1 entry tag, which included a complimentary bottle of milk and an Ox roast. Every 1,500 attendees had their tickets mailed to them directly by Michael Eavis.

The original headliners, The Kinks, backed out at the last minute and were replaced by up-and-comers T. Rex. In the dying days of the UK hippy movement, can you picture yourself jamming out to Ride a White Swan? Amazing supernatural power.

Pilton Pop, folk & Blues Festival was held for the first and last time in 1970. The following year, it was rebranded as Glastonbury Fair. Due to the debut of the now-iconic Pyramid Stage, this year’s festival will go down as one of the most memorable in its long and illustrious history. Scaffolding and expanding metal covered in plastic sheeting may seem like a far cry from the legendary stage of today, but every legend had to start somewhere.

Time & Location Glastonbury Festival 2023

The dates for Glastonbury 2023 are June 21 through June 25, starting on a Wednesday. If you can’t make it to Worthy Farm in person but want to see the music from the comfort of your own home, the best days to do so are June 23, 24, and 25.

An essential first step in buying tickets is pre-registration; you won’t be able to do so unless you do. You’ll need to provide some identifying information and a photo of yourself for verification. The deadline for free registration is Monday, October 31, at 5 pm GMT.

What to Expect at Glastonbury Festival 2023

Performers like Kendrick Lamar, Paul McCartney, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Diana Ross, Little Simz, Primal Scream, Pet Shop Boys, and Wet Leg were all on stage in 2018.

On the opening night of Glastonbury 2023, Sunday, March 23, Elton John will take the Pyramid Stage as the festival’s first confirmed headliner. There will be plenty of sobs because this will be Rocket Man’s last-ever tour, and this show will be the last in the UK.

No doubt the remainder of the 2023 lineup won’t be announced until late spring of the following year, but there’s already been plenty of talk about who else could be performing at the event.

Arctic Monkeys are said to have already signed the deal to headline the Pyramid Stage, while Harry Styles, the Spice Girls, Taylor Swift, and even Beyoncé have all been mentioned as possible headliners.

If you plan to spend your next holiday in the UK, attending the Glastonbury Festival is necessary. Plenty of exciting places and friendly tourist areas to see. You can always create your best traveling moments by booking flights, hotels, and activities on Traveloka!
