The Jeju Fire Festival (Jeongwol Daeboreum in Korean) is one of the most important festivals in South Korea. Even though the festival originated on Jeju Island, locals outside the island also celebrate the festival.

It started two million years ago when Jeju Island was first formed after a series of volcanic eruptions. The eruption created the appearance of Jeju Island as we know it now. The Jeju Fire Festival is held annually to commemorate that occasion and serve as a historical reminder.

This festival is celebrated every first Thursday of March for three days. This celebration is full of agricultural traditions, such as burning fields as a sign of welcoming spring and ending winter. Not only that, there are also traditional markets and cultural programs for tourists who come to the island especially for the Jeju Fire Festival.
