Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world because it held its inaugural edition in 1877. The competition, held on grass at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, was initially attended by only 21 amateur tennis players who participated in the men's singles department.

In the early 1900s, Wimbledon's status rose from a British locale to an international tournament. Then in the 1950s, most tennis players turned professional while Wimbledon struggled to remain an amateur player's tournaments.

However, in 1968, Wimbledon became a professional or open era and regained its status as an international tournament. Counting from when professional tennis players were allowed to compete (open era) in 1968, the Wimbledon men's singles championship has occurred 54 times.
