Phu Bai International Airport is about 15 km southeast of central Huế. A taxi usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
The IATA code is HUI and the ICAO code is VVPB. The airport is often simply called Huế Airport, or Sân bay Phú Bài in Vietnamese.
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air are the main carriers at Phu Bai, flying to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City among other domestic points.
Most flights at Phu Bai are domestic. International service is limited, so check the current schedule before planning a direct trip abroad from Huế.
Taxis, airport shuttles and public buses all run from Phu Bai toward central Huế. The Citadel is on the north bank of the Perfume River, and a taxi is the quickest door-to-door choice.
The two-level terminal at Phu Bai has aerobridges, cafés, shops, a VIP lounge and parking for cars, taxis and coaches.
The airport is in Phú Bài town, part of Huế, southeast of the city centre. It also serves travellers going to Quảng Trị province.
Heavy rain in central Vietnam can slow traffic between Huế and Phu Bai, so allow extra time for the drive, especially in the later months of the year.
Phu Bai International Airport is the air gateway to Huế, the former imperial capital of Vietnam. It takes its name from Phú Bài, the town just outside Huế where the airport sits, and it also serves travellers heading to nearby Quảng Trị province. For most visitors it is the quickest way to reach the Perfume River, the old Citadel and the royal tombs without a long overland journey.
The airport lies southeast of Huế, roughly 15 km from the city centre. The drive usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and where you are staying. Hotels along the Perfume River and inside the Citadel area are all within easy reach.
Passengers use a modern two-level terminal with aerobridges, check-in halls on the ground floor and waiting areas upstairs. You will find cafés, snack counters, souvenir shops and a VIP lounge, plus parking for cars, taxis and coaches right outside. The layout is compact, so moving from the kerb to the gate is straightforward.
Flights here are mainly domestic. Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air both connect Huế with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two busiest links, and other domestic routes run on some days. International services are limited, so check the latest schedule if you hope to fly abroad directly from Huế.
Huế's Imperial City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the obvious first stop, with palaces, gates and moats inside the old Citadel. Thiên Mụ Pagoda stands above the Perfume River a short ride west of the centre. The tombs of the Nguyễn emperors, spread across the hills south of the city, are an easy half-day trip from the airport side of town.
Central Vietnam has a rainy season in the later months of the year, and heavy rain can slow the road to the airport, so leave extra time. If you are combining Huế with Đà Nẵng or Hội An, compare flying from each city, as schedules and airlines differ.
