My second stay in this hotel, and I'm still happy with the services. The happiest part is they have tap water 😊 and super easy access to MTR and buses. Thank you Royal Plaza. PS: Need to watch out that there are rooms with separate showers and without. Please check prior to booking, especially for the elderly.

Stayed 6 nights at Cityview. The room was clean and drinking water was always available from the dispenser. The hotel is close to the MTR, hospital, 24-hour shops, and food stalls. A few minutes walk away, you can find fast food and other eateries. The staff was very friendly, even helping me provide first aid after I fell while walking on a rainy day. Highly recommended, I will stay here again if I visit Hong Kong 👍

Food & Dining

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's culinary landscape is a vibrant fusion of Cantonese traditions and international influences, making it a global gastronomic capital. Iconic dishes like dim sum, with its delicate steamed dumplings and buns, are a must-try, alongside the rich flavours of roast goose and char siu pork. The city's street food scene is equally legendary, offering delights such as fish balls, egg waffles (gai daan jai), and stinky tofu, providing an authentic taste of local life.

For an immersive culinary journey, explore the bustling markets and food streets scattered throughout Hong Kong. Areas like Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei are renowned for their vibrant street food stalls and local eateries, offering a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified restaurants is increasingly feasible, with many establishments offering diverse cuisines that cater to dietary needs, ensuring everyone can enjoy Hong Kong's food offerings.

Dining in Hong Kong offers a spectrum of price points, from incredibly affordable street food starting at just a few USD per serving to mid-range eateries and world-class fine dining establishments. This range provides excellent value for international travellers. For instance, a satisfying meal from a street vendor might cost less than a coffee in some Western cities, while a multi-course fine dining experience, though premium, is often competitively priced compared to similar offerings in New York or London.

Navigating Hong Kong's dining scene is an adventure in itself. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, though locals may dine later. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries, but a service charge is often included in higher-end restaurants. It's polite to wait for your host to start eating and to avoid leaving excessive food on your plate. Embracing the local customs will enhance your dining experiences and show respect for the culture.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Hong Kong

Understanding local etiquette is key to a smooth and respectful visit to Hong Kong. While generally a modern and international city, certain customs are important to observe. For instance, punctuality is valued, especially in business settings. When visiting temples or homes, dress modestly. It's also customary to use both hands when giving or receiving items, such as business cards or gifts, as a sign of respect.

At busy hubs like Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and the vibrant streets of Mong Kok, maintaining awareness of your surroundings is advisable. While dress codes are generally relaxed, it's respectful to dress neatly when visiting religious sites. Queuing is orderly, and respecting personal space, especially in crowded areas, is appreciated. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals.

Hong Kong is a remarkably safe city with low crime rates, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings in crowded tourist areas. Public transportation, including the MTR and buses, is efficient and safe. Ride-hailing apps like Uber are available, alongside local taxi services. Having offline maps and essential communication apps downloaded can be very helpful for navigation and staying connected.

In case of emergencies, the police and ambulance services can be reached by dialling 999. For travellers from the US, the Consulate General is located in Hong Kong. European travellers can seek assistance from their respective consulates (e.g., UK, Germany, France). Indian citizens can contact their Consulate General, and travellers from Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa should reach out to their diplomatic missions. It is always recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies.

Travel Guide

Getting to Hong Kong and Getting Around

Reaching Hong Kong from major global hubs is well-established. Travellers from the US, departing from cities like JFK, LAX, or ORD, can expect flight durations of around 15-17 hours to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), often with one stop. European travellers from London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS), or Paris (CDG) typically face flight times of 11-13 hours. For Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL), flights are shorter, around 5-7 hours. African travellers from Nairobi (NBO) or Lagos (LOS) can expect journeys of 10-14 hours, often with connections.

Once you arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), getting around the city is remarkably efficient. The Airport Express train offers a swift connection to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island in under 30 minutes. The extensive MTR (Mass Transit Railway) system is the backbone of public transport, connecting virtually all major areas, including those mentioned in Section 2. Buses, trams, and ferries provide further options, making it easy and affordable to explore the city.

The best time to visit Hong Kong generally falls between October and December, offering pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and clear skies, ideal for outdoor exploration. Spring (March to May) can be warm and humid with occasional rain, while summer (June to August) is hot, humid, and prone to typhoons. Visiting during the shoulder seasons can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds, potentially impacting hotel pricing.

Before your trip, ensure you have your passport and any necessary visa documentation. The local currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD), though major credit cards are widely accepted, and some larger establishments may accept USD. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport or in the city is recommended for easy data access. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and the MTR Mobile app for public transport information.

Given that immigration policies can change, it is imperative for all travellers to verify the latest visa regulations with the Hong Kong Immigration Department or the relevant Hong Kong SAR government authority before making any travel arrangements.
