In terms of cleanliness, comfort & services, this place is very very satisfying! The room is actually much nicer & cleaner than in the photos. It was such an unforgettable honeymoon stay in here for us at Gili Air. We unexpectedly got complimentary of switching room to the Scallywags Mango Retreat which is more quiet and secluded. They have crazy friendly staffs there :) The food in the Scallywags restaurant was really delicious too! They have a very romantic spot in the beach to have a dinner under the stars. Definitely gonna stay there again if we were staying in Gili 😊

More about hotels in Gili Air

Gili Air: Indonesia's Island Escape for Every Traveller

Gili Air presents a unique proposition within Indonesia's vast archipelago, offering a tranquil yet vibrant island experience that distinguishes it from the bustling metropolises or more remote wilderness destinations. Unlike mainland Bali or Java, Gili Air provides a car-free environment where the gentle pace of island life is dictated by the rhythm of the waves and the rustle of palm trees. This car-free status immediately sets it apart, fostering a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to international visitors seeking an escape from the everyday. Its proximity to Lombok, yet distinct identity, makes it an accessible slice of tropical destination.

The island itself is a microcosm of diverse experiences, with distinct areas catering to different preferences. The eastern side, often bustling with activity and sunset bars, contrasts with the quieter, more secluded western and northern shores. Even within these broad strokes, subtle variations emerge: one stretch might be known for its excellent snorkeling spots directly offshore, while another offers a more laid-back vibe with yoga studios and health-conscious cafes. Understanding these nuances is key to unlocking the Gili Air that best suits your travel style, ensuring your stay is perfectly aligned with your expectations.

For international travellers, Gili Air represents exceptional value, with an average starting price of just USD 10.14 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.7 from over 5,659 guests. This affordability, combined with high guest satisfaction, positions Gili Air as an attractive destination for budget-conscious travellers from India and Africa, as well as value-seeking explorers from the United States and Europe. It offers a tropical island experience that punches well above its weight in terms of quality and experience relative to cost.

Accommodation on Gili Air ranges from charming bungalows to more established resorts, reflecting the island's diverse appeal. Properties like Mola2 Resort Gili Air Lombok by DHM Resort, a 3-star resort known for its diving and snorkeling facilities, offer a comfortable base for active travellers. Similarly, the 3-star Bel Air Resort and Spa provides a more refined experience with amenities like bicycle storage and car rental, catering to those who appreciate a blend of relaxation and convenience. These options exemplify the quality available, allowing travellers to book hotel stays that fit their needs.

Gili Air is a destination that thoughtfully accommodates a global clientele. US travellers often seek adventure and unique experiences, finding ample opportunities for diving and exploring. European visitors, with their appreciation for culture and value, will discover a relaxed pace and natural beauty that resonates. Indian families can find affordable and enjoyable stays, with many accommodations offering family-friendly amenities. For travellers from Africa, Gili Air offers a tropical escape that is relatively accessible and provides a distinct island culture to explore.

Visitors can savour fresh seafood grilled to perfection, often caught daily by local fishermen. Signature Indonesian dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Mie Goreng (fried noodles) are ubiquitous and expertly prepared. For those seeking authentic tastes, try Gado-Gado, a vegetable salad with peanut sauce, or Satay, marinated and grilled skewers. The island's dining scene provides an accessible introduction to the rich culinary heritage of Indonesia.

The island's dining landscape is diverse, with options ranging from casual beachside warungs to more established restaurants. The East Coast, particularly around areas like Mowie's Bar, is a hub for lively eateries offering sunset views and a variety of cuisines. For travellers seeking Halal options, which are abundant given Indonesia's Muslim majority, most local restaurants readily provide Halal-certified dishes. Exploring the small lanes away from the main tourist strips often reveals hidden local gems serving authentic Indonesian fare at very reasonable prices.

Dining on Gili Air offers excellent value for international travellers. While street food and local warungs can be as affordable as USD 3-5 per meal, mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 8-15 for a main course. Even more upscale dining experiences rarely exceed USD 25-30 per person, making Gili Air significantly more budget-friendly than many Western destinations. This affordability allows visitors from the US, Europe, India, and Africa to enjoy a wide array of culinary experiences without straining their travel budgets.

When dining in Gili Air, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically enjoyed at a relaxed pace. While tipping is not mandatory, a small gratuity of 5-10% for exceptional service is always appreciated. It's common to use cutlery, but eating with the right hand is also acceptable in very casual settings. Be open to trying new dishes and engaging with restaurant staff, who are generally friendly and eager to share their local cuisine with visitors.

While the island is accustomed to international tourists, dressing modestly when away from the immediate beach areas is advisable, particularly when visiting local villages or smaller shops. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. Greetings are usually warm; a simple "Selamat pagi" (good morning) or "Terima kasih" (thank you) goes a long way in fostering positive interactions with locals.

When visiting popular spots like Gili Air Island or Mowie's Bar, general tourist etiquette applies. Be mindful of noise levels, especially during quieter hours. Photography of individuals should always be preceded by a polite request. Queuing is generally orderly, and respecting personal space is appreciated. The car-free nature of the island means that walking or cycling are the primary modes of transport, and being aware of your surroundings while navigating these paths is important.

Safety on Gili Air is generally high, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and out of sight, especially in crowded areas or when leaving your accommodation unattended. While ride-hailing apps are not prevalent due to the lack of cars, local transport like horse-drawn carts (cidomos) and bicycles are readily available and generally safe. It's wise to agree on prices beforehand for any hired transport. Staying aware of your surroundings, particularly at night, is always recommended.

For emergencies, local police and medical services are available, though response times may vary. It's advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation. For US citizens, the nearest embassy is in Jakarta, Indonesia; for Europeans, embassies are also typically in Jakarta (e.g., UK, Germany, France). Indian citizens can find consular services in Bali or Jakarta, and African nations may also have representation in Jakarta. Always confirm the location and contact details of your country's nearest diplomatic mission.

Your Journey to Gili Air: Flights, Transport, and Best Times to Visit

Reaching Gili Air involves a multi-step journey for international travellers. For those flying from the United States (e.g., JFK, LAX), expect long-haul flights to Jakarta (CGK) or Denpasar (DPS) in Bali, followed by a domestic flight to Lombok International Airport (LOP). European travellers from London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), or Amsterdam (AMS) will similarly fly into a major Indonesian hub before a domestic hop to Lombok.

Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) will also find connections via Jakarta or Bali. African travellers from Nairobi (NBO) or Lagos (LOS) will typically transit through a Middle Eastern or Asian hub before reaching Indonesia, then taking a domestic flight to Lombok. From Lombok International Airport, a taxi or pre-arranged transfer to Bangsal harbour is required, followed by a short public or private boat ride to Gili Air. Booking your flight well in advance is recommended.

Once you arrive on Gili Air, getting around is refreshingly simple: there are no cars or motorbikes. The island is best explored on foot or by bicycle, which can be rented affordably from numerous vendors. For longer distances or a more traditional experience, horse-drawn carts (cidomos) are available, though it's advisable to agree on the fare beforehand. Public boats operate between the Gili Islands, and private speedboats can be chartered for more direct or flexible travel. Navigating the island is part of its charm, offering a peaceful and eco-friendly way to discover its nooks and crannies.

The best time to visit Gili Air generally aligns with Indonesia's dry season, from April to October. During these months, you can expect sunny days, lower humidity, and calmer seas, which are ideal for snorkeling and diving. While this period is peak season, leading to higher hotel prices and more crowds, it offers the most reliable weather. For travellers from India, this period often coincides with summer holidays, making it a popular choice. Shoulder seasons, like April-May and September-October, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

Before your trip to Gili Air, ensure you have the local currency, Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), though USD is sometimes accepted in tourist establishments. ATMs are available on the island for cash withdrawals. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport or in Lombok can provide affordable data for navigation and communication. Essential apps include offline maps (like Maps.me) and translation tools. While no specific city-registration is needed beyond standard immigration procedures, carrying a copy of your passport and visa details is always prudent. Entering Indonesia for Gili Air: Visa Requirements for International Visitors

For travellers planning to visit Gili Air, understanding Indonesia's visa policy is crucial. US passport holders typically enjoy visa-free entry for short stays (up to 30 days), often extendable once. European travellers from countries like the UK, Germany, and France also generally benefit from visa-free entry for tourism purposes, with similar duration limits. Indian passport holders can usually obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) for short stays, which can be extended, or may opt for an e-VOA for a smoother process. African travellers, including those from Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, will need to check specific requirements; many will be eligible for a VOA, but it is essential to verify this with official sources before travel.

The process for obtaining a Visa on Arrival, where applicable, involves presenting your passport at the immigration counter upon arrival at an international airport in Indonesia (such as Lombok International Airport, LOP, if flying directly or via a domestic connection). You will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and proof of onward travel (a return or onward flight ticket). Fees for the VOA are typically around USD 35 and are payable in USD or local currency. Some nationalities may require an e-VOA, which can be applied for online in advance.

It is imperative for all travellers to verify the latest visa regulations directly with the official Indonesian immigration authorities or their nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate before booking flights. Visa policies can change, and specific requirements may vary based on nationality and the purpose of visit. Confirming your entry requirements ensures a smooth arrival in Indonesia and a hassle-free journey to Gili Air, preventing any unexpected issues at immigration.
