Really like Skylake. Came here with my family. The staff is super helpful and friendly. Met Ms. Yuli who helped me during check-in, I asked for this and that and she still helped me. During checkout, Ms. Suci helped me, took great photos and videos. Thank you. One night but it was truly memorable. The view is very beautiful, they try very hard to maintain cleanliness, even though the flies are impossible to prevent. The jacuzzi is very comfortable 😭 Warm water, can soak until night. Thank you Skylake for the experience ❤️ Oh yeah, maybe the breakfast can be varied again. The kids ate all their breakfast 😆

This was my second time staying at Villa Dangka Kintamani, and it certainly won’t be my last. This time, we booked 6 rooms for our group, and everything was absolutely perfect. The villa is incredibly cozy, but what truly makes this place special is the owner—who is genuinely kind and goes above and beyond for the guests. Since Kintamani can get quite chilly, the hot spring pool was a total lifesaver and a wonderful way to relax. If you’re looking for comfort and great hospitality, this is the place to be!

More about hotels in Kintamani

Kintamani: A Volcanic Vista and Cultural Heartbeat in Bali

Kintamani presents a unique proposition for international travellers seeking an authentic Balinese experience beyond the well-trodden coastal paths. Perched high in the caldera of an ancient volcano, this region offers a dramatic landscape dominated by the majestic Mount Batur and the serene expanse of Lake Batur. Unlike the bustling beaches of the south, Kintamani provides a cooler climate, breathtaking panoramic views, and a slower pace of life that appeals to those yearning for tranquility and natural beauty. Its distinct geography and cultural heritage offer a compelling contrast to other Indonesian destinations, making it a vital stop for a comprehensive exploration of the island.

The Kintamani region itself is not a monolithic entity but rather a collection of distinct villages and hamlets, each possessing its own character and offering a unique perspective on highland life. From the lakeside tranquility of Toya Bungkah to the elevated viewpoints of Pinggan, choosing where to base yourself within Kintamani significantly shapes your entire travel experience. Understanding these nuances allows travellers to tailor their stay to their preferences, whether they seek adventure activities, cultural immersion, or simply a peaceful retreat amidst stunning natural scenery. This internal diversity is key to unlocking the full potential of a Kintamani visit.

For international visitors, Kintamani represents exceptional value, particularly when considering the cost of accommodation and activities compared to more developed tourist hubs. With average prices for hotels starting around Mount Batur at approximately USD 9.16 per night, it offers an accessible entry point for budget-conscious travellers from India and Africa, while still providing a high-quality experience for value-seeking visitors from the United States and Europe. This affordability, coupled with the unparalleled natural beauty, positions Kintamani as a destination that delivers significant impact without a prohibitive price tag.

The accommodation landscape in Kintamani is as varied as its scenery, with options catering to a wide spectrum of preferences and budgets. For instance, areas around Toya Bungkah are known for their natural hot springs and lakeside resorts, offering a blend of relaxation and accessibility. These lakeside properties, often featuring direct access to the thermal waters, provide a unique selling point for travellers looking to unwind. Exploring these diverse lodging options is crucial for any visitor aiming to fully appreciate what Kintamani has to offer, and finding the right place to stay is the first step to a memorable trip; you can book hotel here to start planning.

Kintamani appeals to a broad range of international travellers. For those from the United States, its adventurous spirit, including trekking opportunities on Mount Batur, aligns with a desire for active exploration. European travellers, often drawn to cultural depth and historical significance, will find Kintamani's unique Balinese Hindu traditions and serene landscapes a refreshing change. Indian families, frequently seeking value and memorable experiences for all ages, will appreciate the affordable accommodation and the natural beauty that offers a different kind of holiday. Travellers from African nations, particularly those seeking accessible and visually stunning destinations, will find Kintamani a rewarding and relatively straightforward addition to their Indonesian itinerary.

Best Areas to Stay in Kintamani

Kintamani, while a single administrative region, is comprised of several distinct villages and hamlets, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of attractions. For international visitors, understanding these different areas is crucial, as your choice of base will significantly influence your experience, from the proximity to natural wonders like Mount Batur and Lake Batur to the availability of local amenities and the overall ambiance. Selecting the right neighbourhood ensures your stay aligns with your travel goals, whether you prioritize adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion.

Toya Bungkah

Toya Bungkah, situated along the shores of Lake Batur, offers a tranquil and scenic base for exploring the Kintamani region. This area is particularly renowned for its natural hot springs, providing a unique opportunity for relaxation amidst stunning volcanic scenery. It appeals to travellers seeking a serene escape, including many from Europe who appreciate the natural wellness aspects and the slower pace of life. The proximity to the lake also makes it a popular choice for those interested in water activities and enjoying the picturesque caldera views, with hotels like D Sila’s Tepi Danu Villas Kintamani & Natural Hot Spring offering direct access to these rejuvenating waters.

From Toya Bungkah, visitors can easily access the starting point for the popular Mount Batur sunrise trek, a highlight for many adventurers from the US and India. The area also boasts several local eateries serving fresh lake fish and traditional Balinese dishes. Getting to Toya Bungkah from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) typically involves a scenic drive of about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. For those looking to explore further afield, arranging local transport or car rental is advisable to discover the wider Kintamani area and its attractions, including opportunities to book attractions like guided treks.

Pinggan Village

Pinggan Village offers a more rural and traditional Balinese highland experience, characterized by its sweeping rice paddies and unobstructed views of Mount Batur. This area is suited to travellers who want an authentic glimpse into local life and a peaceful retreat away from more developed tourist spots. It particularly resonates with European visitors interested in photography and cultural immersion, as well as Indian families looking for a serene environment. Accommodations here, such as Pinggan Everest Bali and Pinggan Glamping Hill, often provide a more intimate connection with the natural surroundings and the local community.

Pinggan is a prime location for experiencing the sunrise over Mount Batur, with many guesthouses and hotels offering direct, unobstructed views. The village itself is small, but its charm lies in its simplicity and the surrounding agricultural landscapes. Local warungs (small restaurants) serve authentic Indonesian cuisine. The journey from the airport to Pinggan is similar to Toya Bungkah, taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by car. While public transport is limited, the availability of car rentals and local drivers makes exploring nearby villages and attractions straightforward for visitors.

Kintamani Central (around the main road)

The central area of Kintamani, often referred to as the main commercial hub along the caldera rim road, provides a convenient base with easy access to amenities and stunning viewpoints. This stretch is dotted with restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops, making it a practical choice for travellers who value accessibility and a lively atmosphere. It suits a broad range of international visitors, including those from the US and India, who appreciate having essential services within easy reach. Hotels like Lakeview Hotel & Restaurant Kintamani are situated here, offering commanding views and convenient dining options.

This central location serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Kintamani region. Visitors can easily arrange tours to Mount Batur, visit the local markets, or simply enjoy the panoramic vistas from the numerous viewpoints. Dining options range from local Indonesian fare to more international-inspired menus. The drive from the airport is around 1.5 hours. While taxis and ride-hailing services are available, exploring further afield often requires pre-arranged transport or car rental, especially for reaching more remote natural attractions or villages.

Batur Tengah

Batur Tengah, a village located closer to the base of Mount Batur, offers a more immersive experience for those keen on adventure and natural exploration. This area is particularly attractive to younger travellers and adventure enthusiasts from the US and Europe who are drawn to the trekking and hiking opportunities. Accommodations here, such as The Cave Hotel Kintamani, often provide a more rustic and close-to-nature feel, with many properties serving as direct gateways to the mountain trails and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

The primary draw of Batur Tengah is its direct access to Mount Batur's hiking trails, making it an ideal starting point for sunrise treks. The village itself has a more local feel, with fewer tourist amenities compared to the main caldera road, but offers a more authentic glimpse into Balinese village life. Local eateries are available, serving simple, hearty meals. Travel time from the airport is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. For exploring beyond the immediate vicinity, hiring a local guide or arranging transport is recommended, as public transit is minimal.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Kintamani

Kintamani's culinary landscape is deeply rooted in Balinese traditions, offering a distinct flavour profile that complements its highland setting. While sharing some staples with the rest of Indonesia, the region boasts unique specialties influenced by its volcanic terrain and agricultural bounty. For international visitors, exploring these local tastes provides an essential dimension to their cultural immersion. Dishes often feature fresh, locally sourced ingredients, prepared with traditional methods that highlight the natural flavours, making dining a key part of the Kintamani experience.

The most iconic culinary experience in Kintamani revolves around the bounty of Lake Batur and the surrounding fertile lands. Freshly grilled or fried lake fish, often served with sambal matah (a raw Balinese chili relish) and steamed rice, is a must-try. Another local delicacy is Babi Guling (suckling pig), though this is more commonly found in specific restaurants rather than as a widespread street food. For those seeking vegetarian options, various vegetable dishes like Lawar (mixed vegetables with coconut and spices) and Gado-Gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce) are widely available and delicious.

Dining establishments in Kintamani range from humble local warungs to more established restaurants, particularly along the main road overlooking the caldera and near the lake. Areas around Toya Bungkah and Batur Tengah offer numerous lakeside restaurants specializing in fresh fish. For travellers seeking Halal options, it's advisable to look for restaurants displaying the Halal certification or to inquire directly, as many warungs and eateries cater to a diverse clientele. The central Kintamani area also provides a concentration of dining choices, including those near hotels like EL LAGO HOTEL and Pinggan Everest Bali, offering convenience and variety.

The price of food in Kintamani offers excellent value for international travellers. A hearty meal at a local warung, including a main dish and a drink, can cost as little as USD 3-5. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 7-15 per person for a full meal. While Kintamani is not known for high-end fine dining, the quality and authenticity of the food at these accessible price points are remarkable, especially when compared to dining costs in major Western cities or even other popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. This affordability allows visitors to sample a wide variety of local dishes without significant budget strain.

Practical dining tips for Kintamani include understanding local meal times, which generally align with Indonesian customs: breakfast is early, lunch around noon, and dinner typically starts around 7 PM. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. When ordering, it's polite to use basic Indonesian phrases like "Terima kasih" (thank you). Be adventurous and try local specialties, but if you have dietary restrictions, communicate them clearly. Many warungs are family-run, so a friendly demeanor and patience go a long way in ensuring a pleasant dining experience.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Kintamani

Navigating the cultural landscape of Kintamani requires an awareness of local customs to ensure respectful interactions and a smoother travel experience. While Balinese culture is generally welcoming to tourists, understanding certain norms can prevent misunderstandings and foster positive engagement. The highland communities in Kintamani often maintain traditions that are more pronounced than in some coastal areas, offering a deeper insight into Balinese Hindu practices and daily life.

When visiting temples or traditional ceremonies, which are common throughout Kintamani, it is essential to dress modestly. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees; sarongs are often provided or available for rent at temple entrances. It is considered disrespectful to point with your feet or to step over people or food. When interacting with locals, a gentle smile and polite greetings are always appreciated. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always courteous to ask for permission before taking close-up photos of individuals, especially during religious activities.

Safety in Kintamani is generally good, with the region being a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas or markets, and avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are available in some parts of Kintamani, though their coverage might be less extensive than in larger cities. Negotiate taxi fares beforehand or ensure the meter is used. The roads can be winding and steep, so exercise caution if renting a motorbike.

In case of emergencies, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, contact local clinics or hospitals, and it's advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. The nearest embassies for major international visitors are located in Denpasar or Jakarta. For US citizens, the US Embassy in Jakarta and Consulate in Surabaya are key contacts. European citizens can rely on their respective embassies in Jakarta. Indian citizens can contact the Consulate General of India in Bali. For African travellers, checking with their embassy in Jakarta or nearest consulate is recommended. Always carry a copy of your passport and visa information separately.

Getting to Kintamani and Getting Around

Reaching Kintamani involves a journey to Bali's main international gateway, Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), located in Denpasar. For travellers from the United States, flights typically involve one or two layovers, with total journey times ranging from 20 to 30+ hours, often connecting through hubs like Singapore, Doha, or Dubai. European travellers from cities like London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS), or Paris (CDG) can expect similar flight durations, usually with one stop.

Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), or Bangalore (BLR) will find direct or one-stop options, with journey times around 8-12 hours. For travellers from Africa, flights from Nairobi (NBO), Lagos (LOS), or Johannesburg (JNB) will involve multiple layovers, often taking 20-30+ hours. From DPS, Kintamani is approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive, depending on traffic and the specific area within Kintamani you are heading to. You can book flight to Bali to begin your journey.

Once you arrive in Kintamani, getting around requires some planning. Public transport within the region is limited, with local buses connecting some of the villages but not offering a comprehensive tourist service. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are available, especially along the main caldera road, but their availability can decrease in more remote areas. For independent exploration, renting a car with a driver is a popular and convenient option for international visitors, allowing flexibility to visit various viewpoints, attractions, and villages at your own pace. Motorbike rental is also an option for experienced riders, but the winding, sometimes steep roads require caution.

The best time to visit Kintamani is generally during the dry season, which runs from April to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days with cooler temperatures compared to Bali's coastal areas, making it ideal for trekking and outdoor activities. The shoulder months of April-May and September-October offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. The wet season, from October to March, brings higher humidity and more frequent rainfall, which can impact visibility for scenic views and make trekking more challenging, though prices for accommodation may be lower.

Before departing for Kintamani, ensure you have the necessary travel documents, including a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), but USD is widely accepted in tourist areas for larger purchases or hotel bookings, though it's advisable to carry local currency for smaller expenses. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport or in Denpasar is recommended for easy communication and data access. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and ride-hailing apps if available in your chosen area.

Visa Information

US passport holders can typically enter Indonesia visa-free for tourism purposes for up to 30 days, provided their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their stay. European travellers, including those from the UK, Germany, and France, generally benefit from similar visa-free entry policies for short tourist stays.

Indian passport holders usually have a visa-on-arrival option for tourism, allowing a stay of up to 30 days, which can often be extended.
