I booked a family room. From the photo when I was about to book, the room was quite spacious. When we arrived, oh it turned out to be very spacious even for the five of us. All the facilities provide a serene and calming atmosphere. Very suitable for a family staycation who craves tranquility. Breakfast is available in a package for each person with a varied menu ranging from appetizers to desserts. You can choose for yourself whether you want traditional, oriental or western. The portion is just right for breakfast. Luckily we came when there were not many visitors so even though the swimming pool is small, it feels like a private pool.

Best Areas to Stay in Solo Baru

Solo Baru, while a distinct urban area, is comprised of several neighbourhoods, each possessing its own unique character and appeal for international visitors. Choosing the right district to stay in can profoundly influence your experience, whether you prioritize proximity to shopping centres, a tranquil atmosphere, or easy access to cultural sites. Understanding these nuances will help you select a base that best suits your travel style and interests, ensuring a more fulfilling exploration of this vibrant Indonesian region.

Solo Baru Central Business District

This is the modern heart of Solo Baru, a bustling hub dominated by gleaming skyscrapers, expansive shopping malls like The Park Mall and Hartono Mall Solo, and a plethora of dining and entertainment options. For international travellers, especially those from India and parts of Africa seeking convenience and modern amenities, this area offers a familiar yet distinctly Indonesian urban experience. It’s a place where business and leisure intertwine, providing easy access to retail therapy, international cuisine, and a lively nightlife.

Staying in the Central Business District means you're at the epicentre of commercial activity. You'll find a high concentration of hotels catering to business and leisure travellers, with excellent transport links. From here, accessing other parts of Solo Baru is straightforward via ride-hailing services or local taxis. The area is also a gateway to exploring the wider Solo region, with many tour operators and information centres readily available, making it simple to book attractions and day trips.

Gentan Area

The Gentan area offers a slightly more relaxed atmosphere compared to the central business district, while still being well-connected and offering a good range of amenities. It’s an area that appeals to travellers from Europe and the United States who might be looking for a balance between urban convenience and a more laid-back environment. Gentan is known for its residential feel, interspersed with local eateries, smaller shops, and green spaces, providing a glimpse into everyday Javanese life.

Gentan is a practical choice for visitors who want to be close to the main commercial centres but prefer a quieter base. It’s well-served by local transport, making it easy to reach The Park Mall or Hartono Mall Solo within minutes. The area boasts several guesthouses and smaller hotels that offer a more intimate experience. For those interested in local crafts or seeking out authentic Javanese culinary experiences away from the main tourist crowds, Gentan provides ample opportunities.

Laweyan Heritage District

For travellers with a keen interest in history and culture, the Laweyan district is an absolute must. This area is renowned for its well-preserved traditional Javanese architecture, particularly its batik heritage. European travellers, in particular, often find the historical ambiance and the opportunity to learn about traditional crafts deeply engaging. Laweyan offers a stark contrast to the modern commercial zones, transporting visitors back in time with its intricate buildings and artisanal workshops.

Accommodation in Laweyan often reflects the area's heritage, with boutique hotels and guesthouses that incorporate traditional design elements. While it might be slightly removed from the largest shopping malls, its cultural significance is immense. Visitors can spend days exploring the historic batik factories, learning about the intricate art form, and visiting ancient mosques and traditional houses. Getting to Laweyan is easy via taxi or ride-hailing services from anywhere in Solo Baru, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of exploration.

Sukoharjo Regency (Surrounding Areas)

While technically a regency bordering Solo Baru, the areas within Sukoharjo that are in close proximity to Solo Baru's commercial centres offer a different kind of value and experience. This region often presents more budget-friendly accommodation options, making it particularly attractive for travellers from India and Africa who are budget-conscious. It provides a more local perspective, with a greater concentration of traditional markets and community life, while still being a short commute away from major attractions.

Staying in the Sukoharjo areas adjacent to Solo Baru means you can benefit from lower accommodation costs without sacrificing access to the city's main attractions. These areas are typically served by local bus routes and are easily accessible by car or motorcycle taxi. They offer a chance to experience a more authentic slice of Javanese life, away from the more polished tourist zones. For travellers looking to stretch their budget further, this region provides excellent opportunities for affordable dining and local shopping.

Food & Dining

Solo Baru offers a culinary landscape that is as diverse and exciting as its commercial offerings, deeply rooted in Indonesian flavours with unique Javanese influences. For international visitors, the region presents an opportunity to explore a wide array of dishes, from the fiery spices favoured by some palates to the subtler, sweeter notes characteristic of Javanese cuisine. Iconic dishes like Nasi Liwet, a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk, and Sate Buntel, a unique minced meat satay, are must-tries that showcase the local culinary heritage.

The dining scene in Solo Baru is best explored by venturing into its varied districts. The areas around The Park Mall and Hartono Mall Solo are replete with modern cafes and restaurants offering both local and international fare, catering to a wide range of tastes. For a more authentic experience, exploring local warungs (small eateries) in neighbourhoods like Gentan or the fringes of Sukoharjo will reveal hidden culinary gems. Muslim travellers will find abundant Halal options throughout Solo Baru, as the majority of Indonesian cuisine is prepared according to Halal principles.

In terms of pricing, Solo Baru offers exceptional value for international travellers. Street food and meals at local warungs can be enjoyed for as little as USD 1-3 per person, a fraction of what travellers from the US or Europe might expect to pay back home. Mid-range restaurants typically range from USD 5-15 per person, while upscale dining experiences can be found for USD 20-30. This affordability allows visitors from India and Africa, as well as other markets, to indulge in a rich variety of culinary experiences without significant financial strain.

When dining in Solo Baru, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically communal, and it's polite to wait for elders or hosts to begin eating. While tipping is not mandatory, rounding up the bill or leaving a small gratuity for exceptional service is appreciated. Many local eateries use communal condiments, so it's customary to take only what you intend to use. Understanding these nuances will help visitors navigate the dining scene with confidence and respect for local traditions.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating the cultural landscape of Solo Baru involves understanding and respecting local customs, which are generally warm and hospitable. A key aspect of Javanese etiquette is the concept of "sopan santun" (politeness and grace). This translates to modest dress, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional areas, and a gentle, unhurried demeanour. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and it's customary to use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is considered unclean.

When visiting popular spots like The Park Mall and Hartono Mall Solo, visitors will find a generally relaxed atmosphere. Dress codes are usually casual but modest, particularly for women. Photography is generally permitted, but it's always courteous to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals or their goods. Queuing culture is present, though perhaps less rigid than in some Western countries; patience and politeness are always appreciated. Entry into most public spaces is straightforward, with minimal security checks.

Safety in Solo Baru is generally good, with petty crime being relatively low. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or transport hubs. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a safe and convenient way to get around, often more so than unmetered taxis. For travellers from the US, UK, India, and various African nations, having offline maps and translation apps can be invaluable for navigation and communication.

In case of emergencies, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, dial 118 or 119. While Solo Baru is a relatively safe area, it's always recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. For citizens of the US, UK, India, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, knowing the location of your nearest embassy or consulate in Indonesia is prudent, though they are typically located in Jakarta. Staying informed and prepared ensures a safe and enjoyable trip to Solo Baru.

Travel Guide

Reaching Solo Baru from key international markets involves a journey to Indonesia's primary gateway airports, with onward connections to the region. For travellers from the United States, flights from major hubs like New York (JFK) or Los Angeles (LAX) typically involve one or two stops, with total travel time to Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB) often exceeding 20 hours, followed by a domestic book flight to Adi Soemarmo International Airport (SOC), which serves Solo Baru. European travellers from London (LHR) or Frankfurt (FRA) face similar transit times, with connections usually in the Middle East or Southeast Asia before reaching SOC.

Indian travellers from cities like Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) will find direct or one-stop flights to Jakarta or other major Indonesian hubs, with onward domestic connections to SOC being relatively straightforward. For travellers from Africa, particularly from Nigeria (LOS), Kenya (NBO), or South Africa (JNB), the journey to Solo Baru will likely involve multiple stops, often through the Middle East or Europe, before reaching Indonesia and then connecting to SOC. Adi Soemarmo International Airport (SOC) is located approximately 15-20 kilometres from Solo Baru, with taxi and ride-hailing services readily available for the transfer.

Getting around Solo Baru and its immediate surroundings is convenient and affordable. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab are ubiquitous and offer a reliable way to travel between neighbourhoods, shopping centres like The Park Mall and Hartono Mall Solo, and your accommodation. Local taxis are also available, though it's advisable to ensure they use a meter. For shorter distances, motorcycle taxis (ojek) are a quick and economical option. Public buses also operate within the region, providing a very low-cost way to travel, though they can be crowded and less direct for tourists.

The best time to visit Solo Baru generally aligns with Indonesia's dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and less humid, making it ideal for exploring the city and its attractions. While this period can be considered peak season, especially around local holidays, Solo Baru generally experiences fewer international crowds than more established tourist destinations. Hotel prices may see a slight increase during this time, but the overall value remains excellent for travellers from all source markets.

Before departing for Solo Baru, ensure you have the local currency, Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), though USD is sometimes accepted in larger establishments. It's advisable to exchange some currency upon arrival or withdraw from ATMs. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for language assistance, and ride-hailing apps like Grab. Beyond your passport, ensure you have any necessary visa documentation and consider purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind.

Visa Information

For travellers planning to visit Solo Baru, understanding the visa requirements for entering Indonesia is crucial. Citizens of the United States are typically eligible for a visa-free entry for tourism purposes, allowing stays of up to 30 days, though this can sometimes be extended. European passport holders, including those from the UK, Germany, and France, generally benefit from similar visa-free arrangements for short tourist stays, usually for up to 30 days. It is always advisable to check the latest regulations as policies can be subject to change.

Indian passport holders often have different entry requirements; while some may qualify for a visa-free or visa-on-arrival facility for short tourist stays, it is essential to verify the specific regulations applicable to Indian citizens before travel, as these can be more restrictive. For travellers from African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, visa requirements can vary significantly. Many will require a visa obtained in advance from an Indonesian embassy or consulate, or may be eligible for a visa on arrival. Thoroughly checking the specific requirements for your nationality is paramount.

While visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival options exist for many nationalities, it is always recommended to verify the most current visa policies with the official Indonesian immigration authorities or the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate in your home country well before your planned travel dates. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay and that you can provide proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and potentially hotel bookings in Solo Baru or elsewhere in Indonesia. This proactive approach will ensure a smooth entry into Indonesia.
