It was a great one night stay with Paragon Tower. The rooms are big and clean. We booked family rooms. And we are 8 pax each room. It should be only 6 per room. But we added 2 more each room. The lady in the reception (i forgot her name) she is the best! She accommodated us with a smile and fixed our rooms so we can all stay there. May God bless you. Paragon Tower. Thank you and see you next year! We’ll be booking the same rooms. 😍

For an authentic taste of Ermita, exploring its local markets and food streets is essential. Areas around the bustling commercial centres and near landmarks like the Supreme Court of the Philippines and Manila Doctors Hospital often host vibrant food stalls and small restaurants. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries might require some research, though many establishments are increasingly accommodating, and dedicated Halal restaurants can be found within Manila, often requiring a short journey from Ermita. It's advisable to inquire directly with restaurants about their preparation methods.

The cost of dining in Ermita offers excellent value for international visitors. Street food and local eateries can provide a hearty meal for as little as USD 2-5, while mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 10-20 per person for a full dining experience. Even more upscale dining options remain considerably more affordable than in many Western cities, with a three-course meal for two costing around USD 30-50. This affordability allows travellers from the US, Europe, India, and Africa to explore a wide range of culinary delights without significant budget strain.

When dining in Ermita, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meal times are generally flexible, with lunch typically between 12 PM and 2 PM, and dinner from 6 PM onwards. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a 10% gratuity often added to the bill or left as a discretionary amount. It's common to use utensils, but eating with hands (kamayan) is also a traditional practice in informal settings. Being open to trying new flavours and engaging with local dining etiquette will enrich your culinary adventure.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating the cultural landscape of Ermita requires an awareness of local customs to ensure respectful interactions and a smoother travel experience. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness, often using terms like "po" and "opo" to show respect, especially to elders or those in authority. A common gesture is the "mano," where a younger person takes an elder's hand and gently presses it to their forehead. While not expected of tourists, observing and respecting these nuances will be appreciated.

When visiting significant sites like the Supreme Court of the Philippines or Manila Doctors Hospital, maintaining a respectful demeanor is crucial. Dress codes are generally conservative, especially within government buildings and hospitals; modest attire such as covering shoulders and knees is advisable. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, so always look for signage or ask permission before taking pictures. Queuing culture is present, and patience is appreciated, particularly in busy public spaces.

For practical safety in Ermita, exercising common sense precautions is recommended. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. For transportation, utilizing reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is generally safe and convenient, offering transparent pricing. While taxis are available, it's wise to ensure the meter is used. Offline maps and translation apps can be invaluable for navigation and communication, particularly if you venture into less tourist-centric parts of the district.

In case of emergencies, the national emergency number is 911. For specific assistance, local police can be contacted, and tourist police units are often available in key areas. The nearest embassies for major source markets include the US Embassy, British Embassy, Indian Embassy, and various African consulates within Manila. It is always prudent to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to be aware of any health advisories relevant to the Philippines before your trip.

Travel Guide

Reaching Ermita from your home country involves understanding the flight routes and typical journey times to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL), the primary gateway to Manila. For travellers from the United States, flights from major hubs like New York (JFK) or Los Angeles (LAX) typically involve one or two stops and can range from 18 to 25 hours. European travellers from London (LHR) or Frankfurt (FRA) can expect similar journey lengths, often around 16 to 22 hours with connections.

Indian travellers from Delhi (DEL) or Mumbai (BOM) might find flights averaging 10 to 15 hours, often with a single stop. For travellers from Africa, originating from cities like Nairobi (NBO) or Johannesburg (JNB), flights are generally longer, often exceeding 20 hours with multiple layovers. Upon arrival at MNL, it's approximately a 30-60 minute drive to Ermita, depending on traffic conditions. You can easily book flight options that suit your schedule and budget on Traveloka.

Navigating Ermita and the wider Manila area is facilitated by a range of public and private transportation options. The Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) systems offer efficient and affordable travel across key parts of the city, with stations conveniently located near Ermita. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are widely available and provide door-to-door service, with fares typically ranging from USD 3-10 for short to medium distances within the city. For a more local experience, jeepneys and tricycles offer very low-cost travel, though they can be crowded and follow fixed routes. Understanding these options will help you move around Ermita and its surroundings effectively.

The best time to visit Ermita generally falls during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is more pleasant with lower humidity and less rainfall. This period aligns with peak tourist seasons for many international travellers, including those from the US and Europe, and coincides with school holidays in some regions. Hotel prices may be higher during these months. The shoulder seasons, such as May and October, can offer a good balance of decent weather and fewer crowds, potentially with more favourable pricing, making them attractive for value-conscious travellers from India and Africa.

Before departing for Ermita, ensure you have a few essentials prepared. The local currency is the Philippine Peso (PHP), but USD is widely accepted in tourist-oriented establishments, though exchanging some currency for local transactions is advisable. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport or in the city provides affordable data and call services. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and ride-hailing apps. Beyond your passport, ensure you have copies of important documents and consider purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

Visa Information

For travellers planning to visit the Philippines to reach Ermita, visa requirements vary significantly based on your nationality. US passport holders typically enjoy visa-free entry for tourism purposes, usually for up to 30 days, which can often be extended. European travellers holding passports from the UK, Germany, or France also benefit from similar visa-free entry privileges for short stays, generally allowing up to 30 days without a pre-arranged visa. It is always recommended to check the latest regulations for your specific country of citizenship.

Indian passport holders generally require a visa to enter the Philippines for tourism. While there might be specific conditions or visa-on-arrival possibilities for certain nationalities, it is most common for Indian citizens to apply for a tourist visa through the Philippine embassy or consulate in their home country well in advance of their travel dates. For travellers from African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, visa requirements can be more stringent, and it is essential to consult the official Philippine immigration website or the nearest embassy for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding application procedures and eligibility.

The application process for a Philippine visa typically involves submitting a completed application form, a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, passport-sized photographs, proof of onward travel (such as a return flight booking), and sometimes evidence of sufficient funds or hotel bookings. Fees and specific document requirements can differ based on nationality and the length of stay requested. It is crucial for all travellers to verify the exact requirements with the Philippines' Bureau of Immigration or the relevant embassy or consulate in their country before making any non-refundable travel arrangements, such as booking flight tickets.
